A friend has one of the above which has suddenly stopped working. When connected to a Mac/PC, there is a blue light (assuming power) and a beep. It's been like this for about 4 days. It has not been dropped.

We've done the following:

  • New Cable
  • Firmly wiggled the USB on each end - Drive & Laptop
  • Rescan Device Manager

The contents need to be recovered and my last ditch attempt will be to dismantle the drive and use a docking station.

Before we do this, any suggestions would be great :)

if its not being seen at all by the PC then there is not much else you can do. it maybe the enclosure that's causing the issue.

have a look online and see if there is any guides on removing the HDD from it to make sure you can then use it as a internal drive.

That was my first thought, the enclosure. I'm actually going to be in Manchester week commencing 20th so I can have a proper look at the device. It would seem however, this is a common issue with these Seagate drives as this is reported across a number of forums.

The most common fix appears to be a new cable or to firmly/violently wiggle the USB on the enclosure. Seeing as the device is less than 4 months old, I'm not keen on dismantling it and she's been quoted £500 for recovering the data.

Assuming I can get the data off, I'll tell her to take it back for a refund and give her a better choice of drive to get instead.

shame its got data on it otherwise you could have just returned it.

they would mostprob have to take the enclosure apart to be able to get the data off the HDD so you may as well try yourself as the hdd maybe fine

if the data is that important this is what I would do.

watch some videos online about taking the HDD out, take your time and be gentle as once removed you maybe able to get the data from it and then format the drive. after put the drive back together (providing no scratches or damaged caused) and then see if you can return it to where you got it from.

no harm in trying and if it works it saves £500 and get a refund\swap out for another external drive.
