Hi all,

Recently put a rig together and put an oldish, yet fully working Sammy mech drive into it. Ever since putting Windows 7 onto it, it is constantly going absolutely mental reading and writing, even when sat in Windows itself doing nothing.

Any ideas what is causing this and if others have experienced the same?

Cheers

Could be windows update running in the background?

try using task manager\resource monitor to see what's using the HDD loads

IIRC 2 main causes of that in Windows 7 if left enabled are automatic updates and search indexing. If you have a readyboost device or hybrid cache that will often cause quite a bit of disc activity especially for the first few minutes after startup.

Also possible its defender in the background or some malware.

Check in Event Viewer, System tab, filter by "Disk, disk", if there are detectable disk errors, they will show in here. If you find any, bin/RMA the drive.

If you leave it for 30 mins, is it still doing it?

As above, it could be Superfetch cache building or indexing files for search.
