Sandy Bridge GPU encoding?

Hi there I've seen a video on YouTube showing how the built in gpu on the 2600k (HD3000) can encode eg. Divx 50% faster than the fastest Cuda gpu's egs 460's 580's. What I was wondering is, I'm planning on using a P67 board where the on chip gpu is disabled , il be using a high end gpu for games, would the on chip gpu kick in when I encode films then turn off when I play games? Or will the new feature be redundant?

That feature doesn't work on P67 motherboards only H67.

Your choice is being able to overclock or use the GPU.

I believe the yet to be released Z68 chipset may allow both.

I think even with the Z68 chipset you can only use QuickSync if you have no separate GPU. I've read that Intel are working on a way for it to be used when using a separate GPU though.

hmm would be hard to believe really as cuda is 4x faster than cpu encoding, so that would meen that sandybridge cpus are 6-8x faster than current i7's at encoding, if so then i am jumping on the sandy bridge bandwagon asap.

I'm wondering this - there must be a drawback. Quality? You don't get a fourfold increase for nowt.

Thanks for that link, looks interesting.

Having decided to wait for the fixed SB H/P67 mobos (hopefully April?), maybe I should now hang on for Z68? Anyone got a clue when that might be?? (I guess the CougarPoint fiasco could delay things...)

Given that no current games even max out Sandy Bridge i5 / i7 CPUs, overclocking isn't really required, so my tactics are to buy a cheap-ish H67 board and flip it when the Z67 boards come along. No way am I waiting until May to upgrade to SB! Especially since you can still affect the clock speed on the H67 boards with a 'k' chip, just not the multiplier.

whats with the pictures of gangsters lol

When you get 100 posts, you get the avatar I have.

Next stage is 500, I think, where you get Joe Pesci (I would change the name from 'gangster' to 'terrifying nut job' for him though)

De Niro and Pacino are 'by appointment' only :D
