Sapphire GTO² available exclusively from OcUK and Modding instrutions inside.....

Not only the Sapphire GTO² can be modded, the regular GTO cards from Connect 3D are also moddable. However, the success rate is unknown. If you try this mod, please let me know of your results.

Success 43 : 1 Failed (last update Oct 28 2005).

The steps to do the mod are exactly the same as the Sapphire GTO² mod outlined on page 2.
You just use another Bios.

However, there are some drawbacks compared to the Sapphire GTO² cards:

1. Sapphire uses faster 1.6ns memory, while Connect3D uses only 2.0ns.
2. Sapphire uses a guaranteed R480 core, while Connect3D uses only R423.

theres your answer as to why to go with a GTO2 atpbx. some other GTO`s have indeed been modding but its pot luck as to whether or not they will, and they more than likely will come with slower memory and an older GPU.

i realise it says "Success 43 : 1 Failed" with regards to the GTO but this isnt very accurate. there have been at least 3 unmoddable GTO`s here on these forums, and a handful more across anandtech forums and techpowerups forums, it seems that if it doesnt mod people get dissapointed and cant be arsed to report it so that they can keep an accurate count ;)

Ive ordered a connect3d x800gto, £119 delivered, quite a bit cheaper than the £160+del for gto2; but I am expecting it to unlock. Wish me luck! :D
It unlocked an I have a x800xl atm, Im thinking about reseating the heatsink with artic silver to see if I can drop the temperature when using ATItool artifact temperature to less than 63'c, then I may overclock it.

Mine arrived today from OCuk. :)

Retail boxed. Had to force the Bios update but otherwise Spanking!!!!

Went from P4 2.8 with ATI Sapphire 9700 pro to 2.7 Opty with this PCIe card

3D05 Benchmarks

Original sys 2305

X800 GTO2 Standard 4569
Bios upgraded to X850PE 5147
Overclocked to X850PE speeds 6417

Thats a Very decent Upgrade I reckon!!! :D :D

why would you buy it when you can have this

PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC)

for £2 more

Well I am happy enough with the card. Did not know about the powercolour one and in either case its a short term thing as in about a month I am building a new pc altogether with either SLI or crossfire. So its no big deal.

"Six programmable vertex shader pipelines "

I just got my card recently (Upgraded from a GeForce FX 5700, and man, I just had the a great time replaying Chaos theory), Ive flashed the bios for the extra 4 pipelines and have overclocked it to about 530 Core and 575 Mem. I was wondering what these certex shader pipelines are and how they can help me get the most out of my card :)

yes but the new batch of what was supposed to be a "limited edition" card seems to already have 16 pipes enabled. also dont expect a retail pack, i bought mine from here, it says retail pack on the website, but as much as i like the card i got squat with it.

Hi All

Received my Sapphire X800 GTO2 last week, after reading all the reviews and unlock potential. Checking in ATITool shows that the 16 pipelines are already enabled, but the core shows as an R430, rather than the R480 i was expecting. Is this a new batch with a standard X800 core but all the pipelines opened, as i have managed to get it OC to 446/544 MHz max? Seems pretty low compared to the other OC results i have seen around here.

I am getting an Arctic Cooler next week, so i will check then if it is an R480. If it is will the BIOS update allow some better speeds, or am i stuck with this max frequencies?

Thanks

Hey, just wondering which is the best buy between the Powercolor x850xt and this GTO2 card? The powercolor x850xt is obviously better from the start, but it costs about £60 less than the sapphire x850xt, why? Does the GTO2 overlock to the same performance as the sapphire or the powercolor?

The X850 XT is a lot quicker card than any GTO, GTO16 or GTO2 cards.

Powercolor's card is cheaper than Sapphire's X850XT because Powercolor are clearing stock at a bargain price plus the Powercolor card is FULL RETAIL and has a games bundle.

So Powercolor X850XT all the way, in my view its money bad spent if you still buy a GTO of some sorts when you can have the real thing for similar money from OcUK. :)

Cheers for the quick reply. I'll be putting my order in for the x850xt, plus the amd64 venice 3500+ and mobo, soon 8-) Can you tell me when the offer on the x850xt ends?

Hi,

looking to get one of these and wondered what cables came with it? Specifically want the HDTV one.

Cheers
Andrew

Just as a point of interest, i ordered one of these a few weeks back from ocuk for a relatives pc. I ended up receiving a x800gto. It has a blue pcb and the heatsink says gto2 on it, however ati tool identifies it as a gto, it has 12 pipelines enabled, NO pci-e power connector (on the card). My brother ordered a gto 2 a few months back, he got one with a red pcb which had a pci-e connector and 16 pipes unlocked out of the box.

OCUK might want to ask sapphire just wtf theyre doing slapping a heatsink saying gto2 onto a regular gto and putting it into a gto2 box.
