Sapphire Nitro B850

I've just bought one of these and it's doing the weirdest of things. My 10gb nice stopped working. then it crashed. Then I couldn't get over 60hz on the display.

Took 3 attempts to install AMD drivers.

Just very unstable.

I think you need to make your own thread mate, I've used multiple of these boards in various builds with zero issues. I know countless others that have done the same and it's one of the most highly recommended motherboards on this forum.

The OP is absolutely notorious when it comes to motherboards not working at this point, it's a massive case of PEBCAK.

Ah ha. I see.

I think I've found the problem anyway.

Thanks :D

Could you share? For future readers.

Gladly, although it might be quite niche.

I was in the process of applying Buildzoid's Optimal settings (6200) for my RAM. I'd set Trfc2 to the same value as Trfc1 instead of leaving it on Auto. There were a couple of other settings that had drifted (presumably because of the DDR 5 Nitro Robust Training setting?) from what the guide recommended.

I think that was introducing instability, coupled with an unproven PBO setting.

The 60hz thing was downright weird, but a unplug/replug of the DP cable fixed that. The problem manifested in Debian and Windows too.

TL;DR - I think I was being tired and impatient and probably caused a lot of my own problems. :D

Nope, I wasn't being tired and impatient. This board will be the end of me.

I gave up trying to get the previously known good RAM settings working on this board, and just went with EXPO. First day of playing Wardogs, fine. 100+ FPS. Then I started getting 8 FPS today, and the weird instability returned.

Booted Battlefield 6, 113fps... then a hard lock up. Hmm, reseated the GPU and power connectors and reinstalled the Radeon drivers. Battlefield fine... then a black screen/driver crash. Wardogs still at 8FPS. Now at this point I'd seriously be looking at my GPU, except my 10GBe NIC still won't reliably get a link (previously known good).

I'm starting to think this particular board has serious PCIe training issues, and I'm not the first person to own it. When I received it (from a competitor) the Windows license was preactivated. I use Tiny11 for my Windows builds which only supports local accounts, so it wasn't linked to my MS account.

I've put an RMA in to said competitor, I've done all I can with this I think.

It was supposed to be new, I take it?

Yep, it was purchased new and not a refurb. It looked new when I opened the box, but the preactivated Windows 11 installation suggests otherwise. Anyway, it's back in Bolton and I'm awaiting delivery of a Rog Stryx B850 any minute now...

@Tetras Was definitely the board. The replacement worked flawlessly out of the box.

The windows license thing apparently is something new, it auto activated based on a hardware footprint. As only the board changed I guess it thought it was the same machine? New one in me if so.

This thread is borderline terrifying when you read into it. :(

We do not need those levels of control from our software providers, I really do not care what their reasoning is as it's frankly nonsensical. The same problems would never have happened if you had went with (most) Linux distros, and there's calls from certain governing bodies to try and force the same tricks on those.

"Security" my backside, it's nothing of the sort.

I'm hanging onto W10 currently for convenience and mostly gaming purposes, but I'll be done once they give up support or worse I need a hardware change that screws me.

At risk of going off piste (but I don't think the OP will mind :D) the amount of user metadata that is collected by Windows must be obscene, even with Tiny11 and local account Windows must still be scraping MAC addresses and device IDs up the wazoo if that Activation theory is true.

It's certainly convenient for Activation, but I doubt that's all the fingerprint of my hardware is being used for. Kinda makes clicking "no" to all the tracking and telemetry during Windows installation feel utterly pointless.

Anyway, I have a working machine that will mostly booted into Debian. Windows is for Wardogs and Battlefield and not a lot else. Sooner Javelin and Wardogs come to Linux Windows is toast for me.
