Picked up my new car; and the inbuilt sat nav reads no disc. The documents i have with the car - the original cd/dvd jewel case is present but no disc
.
Garage don’t have a copy, previous owner has no recollection of the disc. Just emailed my local Nissan dealer – they want £116.00 + vat for a disc!!!!

The bay of E is similar prices

What a rip off !!! PFFFT

The problem with Sat Nav disks are the licences involved, its not the actual car companies that are ripping you off its the actual OS licences etc...

I think it's both. When you can be an entire sat-nav app for your phone for £50 then the licenses have to cost a lot less than that. Have you ever known a car manufacturer to sell any accessory for a reasonable amount?

The Nissan system may have additional copy protection that prevents copied disks being used the old MFD2 VW system had this and no one found a way round it so the disks were never available to download. The VW factory disks were dirt cheap on ebay if you bought them one version behind.

OK, backup a bit here.
Who here owns a Tom Tom or similar?
After your initial free updates are finished - what is the yearly charge for new maps?
Somewhere in the region of £50 - £60?

So why should it be any different for in-car Sat-Nav's?

Somebody still has to pay to get the roads updated and in turn that information is licensed out the manufacturer of the sat-nav system.

If the OP had his original disk then upgrading to the latest version would have cost around £50 - £60 at most (certainly the case with my Skoda unit).

As for pirating the updates - justify it as much as you like.
It's no different to stealing any other software.
If you're happy stealing software then that is your call - personally I'm not.

I agree, or the garage doing it - had it almost happen to me until I told them I wouldnt buy the car without the disc - then it suddenly turned up (post the "we'll get you one for £50)!!

If they advertised the car with a working sat nav I would press on the false advertising - as without the disc its not working!!

BMW ones are chuffing expensive too. Funny how friends with M5s have them still on the original DVD - too cheap to get a new one :D.

Actually this reminds me... I think I've still got our E60 on a late 2009/early 2010 one. Need to get the 2011 Professional DVD. I like to get the bare DVD though and then add in the speed cameras myself, as that way I keep them far more up-to date :).

Back in 2008 Pioneer wanted £250 for the latest dvd map discs, just looked now and i can get the latest CNDV-100MT media for £41.

Not bad!

just to clarify, I own the BMW 2011 professional disc, I use the pirate sites to download the same image with the FOC POI info added, this isn't available as a cost option its added by enthusiasts, not sure if that's legal, not sure I care but I do own the original image surely if I want to make copies of that for my own use thats my business?

Where'd you buy the 2011 Professional disc from? All BMW put on the website is "Price on request".

Looking on eBay there's someone selling all three legit 2011 Professional DVDs for £128.00 (or will add in the POI for £30)... but I wonder if the dealers would sell you just the one region disc you want for cheaper...

Re the POI: I've sent our E60 in for servicing to the main-dealers with the modded DVD in it, and speed camera icons showing on the iDrive screen. Not a word was mentioned about it :) (though thinking about it the un-modded DVD was in the glovebox if they wanted to go looking).

Did you expect them to say something?

Surely the dealer must pay for this if they advertised the car with nav?

This is the Nissan 350z I did a post on it last week, there was no advert the car had litterally come in that morning - he did not even know the mileage let alone have time to advetise :(

I purchased it with my recent service, was £165 including an idrive upgrade

as you say it comes on 3 dvd's, I didn't bother asking if I could purchase an individual disc

I've always left mine in the car and I doubt very much whether anyone one would notice the speed camera icons. You can add the speed cameras yourself with a little technical knowhow but I just can't be bothered to add speed cameras and pay for them to be put on.
