Sat NAv

i saw an add on tv for halford doing 50% of all satnav, key word being all.

when in fact they have 50% off 7 sat nav, non being the more popular makes there only on the navigon(i think) sat navs.

can i go into the store and demand 50% of any satnav like it says in the add and even on the main page of their site?

On the web site it say "up to" 50% off all sat navs. The "up to" is in very small print compared to the rest of the text, but its there.

On a seperate note, my 920t is borked, phoned tomtom this morning and after 5 minutes they advised me to send it back to retailer. Got to wait a week for a replacement.

Hi,

The missus wants to get her brother a satnav for xmas. He's coveted other people's satnavs in the past that have live traffic monitoring and factor that into the route planning so you basically always avoid traffic jams where possible.

What is the best satnav to get him that has this functionality? Is it possible to get one where you *don't* have to sign up for an annual subscription, or is that standard for the traffic monitoring ones?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Cheers,

Fred

The Navigon 2200 which halford have for £99 at the moment is probably the best value at the moment and has both text to speech and traffic out of the box.

I was so ****** off about that too. I swore they said "50% off" on tv and not "Up to 50%". Only saw it on their site.

Just thought I would add to this thread. Bought the Garmin 205w today. This is the model that comes with just UK maps installed. Registered with Garmin and updated my map software to latest version, restarted device and et voila, i have all europe and USA on there now as well.

Bit of a result (even though I shall most likely never use the USA)

I have my own tomtom, its old but it has the latest software / maps and i find it to be top knotch !!!! On the other hand we have a garmin at work which i have to use and i find it awfull ! I find it a lot harder to read and half the time it takes me to the wrong place ..

I will be getting a new satnav soon and i know tomtom comes top

tbh I don't mind spending a bit more than £99 as he has got us pretty amazing presents for the last couple of years.

I've heard the Garmin ones are meant to have the best maps, could anyone recommend a Garmin that comes with traffic monitoring out of the box?

Navigon and Garmin both use Navteq maps.

Just thought i would add,

Got my TOMTOM 520 today and im very impressed! Updated it with latest maps/software and its now exactly the same as a 530.

Only done a small trip but it locks onto sats fast and is very accurate. I love all the options and have it transmitting my phone calls and music through the FM radio! Speak to text (i think thats what its called) works excellent while in my room and in a stationary car but not tryed it while moving and think it will be let down a bit by background noise.

Overall very happy for £114 delivered!

can I ask. How did you do the update? Did you use the version of home shipped on CD? Or did you download the latest version of home?

As blueboy2001 said, i installed the latest version from the website, went to 'update my device' and its all pritty simple from there!

OK. Only reason I asked is that my 920 arrived last week. Did the same as you using the latest version of Home from their website and it totally screwed the sat-nav's hard drive. Had to send it back to retailer for an exchange :(

I must have been really unlucky and just got a defective product.

I just updated my 920 firmware using the latest version of home downloaded from the tomtom site and everything seems to have worked.

Is there any way to check the firmware revision on the device?

Replacement 920t arrived yesterday. This time update worked a treat, I did learn my lesson and remembered to back everything up first.

I also got an 8GB SDHC that the 920 recognises perfectly, my question is however, when I use my latest map guarantee I have to install in the SD card as there is insufficient space on the device, do I need to install anything else onto the memory card to make it work or is just the map sufficient, I can't find instructions that are clear enough on this matter.

Egon

edit: Can I just add that I think the TOMTOM Home software is appalling.

Hey,

Sorry for the epic thread bump! I'm in the market for a Satnav unit (for my pops actually), and I've provisionally decided on the TT XL V2 Europe which is around £130. Is this a decent choice for the money? I've seen the new V3 IQ models are just starting to hit the market, but are about £40 more... is this worth the extra or not?

Cheers,

Suman

I've been very impressed by Navigon... they also have new models coming out soon. Generally, lots of features for the price!

What would you guys recommend around £100?

£97.86 Navigon 2100 Max UK & ROI Sat Nav
£119.99 Garmin Nuvi 250 Wide Sat Nav
£119.99 Garmin Nuvi 255 Europe Sat Nav
£119.99 TomTom One UK & ROI Traffic V4

Do you need traffic or European maps? If not then the TomTom One can be had for about £90.

Also, Navigon do a 1200 for about £68 and there's also the Navman S30 and S50 - which I personally would rate above the Garmins because I think their UI is rubbish.

Having said that, I would go into your local Electronics/Car store and try them out in the shop and see how you find them.
