Sat NAv

Ok I spoke to them. Basically Q3 2008 map is for Fresh map subscribers as that’s released every 3 months.

The Latest Maps Guarantee is updated twice a year so you got to purchase 30days before the next update to be eligible. I explained to them I did it just today since they said the next update which is Q4 is out in late Oct and the guy said he put me on his magic list and just before Q4 is out I should be able to update :D

That’s good customer service right there!

Currently looking at the tom tom 520 just has a second hand one from ebay probably looking at just over £100.

Mrk did you get yours for £99 from halfords?

Yes £99.

I'll bung my Garmin 200W on the member's market later on if anyone is interested :)

BTW The Navigon turns itself off after a set time and when you press the power button it goes into an off mode but not a full shutdown - anyone know if that uses battery because the startup time is literally 1-2 seconds max!

I change every now and then, the one before the 200W Garmin was a Garmin C310. The 200W tended to sometimes overestimate routes and i got a bit lost in Basingstoke the other day and I just knew it was time to get something new. besides what i'll get for the 200W means I'd only have spent £20~ of my own money on the Navigon which i can live with :)

Nice, I think I need one which is simiar to your new one to be honset otherwise I would have been intrested. I will use it every day for work and sometimes work in hard to find places, like houses along dirt track roads!

Right got everything sorted on the Navigon now just one thing that's bothiering me, how do I change the time or time zone? manual does not mention it and the time is correct but an hour forwards!

Various 3rd party makers make mounts for them, Arkon springs to mind but a quick google search will reveal all.

Edit*

Just sold my 200W for £95, it's £103 brand new so got a good price lol.

Ok guys I have had a bit of a problem, not with the Navigon itself directly but with how it's mounted in my car.
My dashboard is pretty vast and I have my mounting plate stuck onto the middle of the dashboard and whilst I was happy with it this way on the Garmin due to the large redout text size it makes it a bit difficult reading sub-road names and also junction number as the font is quite small unless you bring your head closer to the unit which is not always an ideal solution amidst heavy traffic.

I only came across this over the past couple of days usage in bright sunlight. At night time or non bright days readability of text is quite alright.

So because of this I've decided to go back to the Garmin and have just ordered a 225WT for £150. I liked the TMC traffic update system on the Navigon so decided to get the Garmin model with that on ;-o

So basicaly if your dash is quite close to you and you can read the test easily in bright sunlight then the Navigon rocks otherwise I'd stick with the garmin for less eyestrain!

I had noticed the Garmin 255WT for £150 that offers Europe maps and traffic... however, I am asking myself whether I need these features... I have only journeyed over to Europe once in recent times and 95% of my driving is local, so would it be money spent unnecessarily. As this is my first GPS, I'm conscious of making a good choice... so rght now, I have a 2100 Max sitting on my desk still in its unopened box while I decide whether to keep it, and if do, then I'll wait until I actually need it with the hope that I will get 4Q08 maps before my 30 days expires.

- Route directions on the motorway and A/B roads etc are spoken giving the name of that part of road, eg: the lady will say “Please take the 1st exit at the roundabout onto the M27””

Does it do this out of the box or does it require the text-to-speech add-on?

You could have added Text to Speech.
I prefer looking at the map as well as using the voice directions just so I can make sure I'm not mis-hearing something amidst traffic noise, music noise or people talking to me in the car!

The Q4 map update is out in late October for Navigon. The Navigon is great if you don't have to put the unit on your dash too far away because the text is quite small so on a complex route you will find yourself bending over to read local road names or exit numbers as I found in my car!

The 255WT has the FM traffic updater so can reroute in jams, I needed this as it is quite good down these parts or on the occasions I go to out and about.

Does it do this out of the box or does it require the text-to-speech add-on?

It does this out of the box. It only does it for motorways and things though, not normal road names or place names. For them you need to buy Text to speech for £15 through Fresh.

Ok the 255WT came today and I have a question. It came with a cable which looks like an aerial with a small headphone plug on the end, this also came with 2 small suction cups to attach the cable to the windscreen BUT the 255WT does not have a socket for this to plug in to!

The device is nice though!

You're never happy are you mrk! Monitors, satnavs, the list of gadgets you keep changing is endless!

Only after trying several pieces of hardware out am I satisfied with one! it's all settled now :), monitor, satnav, speakers etc - all exactly how I like them!
