On start up I now have this message.

Sata 1 S.M.A.R.T, Status BAD: Backup and replace?

OK I need to replace the hard drive, but before I do that I want to try and save any emails etc. How can I get it to boot. Can I disable the S.M.A.R.T settings in the BIOS? The board is a Asus P5E3 Deluxe.

You can disable smart in the bios menu normally. Why not boot from another drive and then copy over anything you can from this failing one.

All my files/docs are already backed up.
It is just my emails from the last week or so. Copying files from my "Windows Live Mail folder" has never worked successfully for me, so Ideally I would like to open up my Windows Live Mail one last time and export the messages.

Well disabling S.M.A.R.T in the BIOS does not work as I just get ...

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error occurred.

Looks like I have to boot from another drive.
