N00b question I'm afraid - Will a SATA3 drive work in a SATA2 system just slower?

Please help...

I know I dont need it - I just wanted to check to see if it would work since I'd ordered one.

The specification was released last summer, but same, I hadn't realised there were motherboards with this on.

It's not hard to imagine though that some of the new SSD's will able to make use of it.

i think the OP is getting a SATA 3 harddrive, not that the motherboard has SATA 3, i believe.

Unless you put a couple of SSDs in striped RAID you won't be needing SATA-3 anytime soon me thinks :)

Yes you will, OCZ have already hit over 500 MB/s in a single drive, and they'll be growing very quickly, probably also SSD with dual disks in them.

you've ordered a SATA 3 harddrive? i didnt even know that SATA 3 was fully ratified and official?

I can't post a link obviously but the drive description states...
Code:
Western Digital WD CAVIAR G- POWER 1TB SATA3 16MB

If you are a member of AVforums, you'll know that you'll be able to get free delivery from this site.

Well they also have an out of stock item listed as

Code:
Western Digital WD 1TB 3.5 INCH AV GREENPOWER EDITION 16MB SATA-II HDD

Both HD10EVCS

so I took the other to mean a SATA3 [shrug]

Trust me, it's not, it's not out yet and won't be for at least another couple of months, unfortunately some idiots put SATA3 instead of SATA 3.0gbps which would have course be correct.

I agree, searching for the wd10evcs brings up a lot more SATA-2 drives than anything else.
