Sauber launch thread

Well it would be a byproduct of the diffuser, obviously it would still have to do its normal job as well.
They're mutually exclusive. Either the diffuser is tuned to create as much downforce as possible, or you'd tune it to give out extremely turbulent air, which would make the car slow.

to get more air to the rear of the car? As without double diffusers or last year's blown diffusers they'll be lacking rear down force.

McLaren's were quite small last year.

^ that makes sense I suppose.

Wont the engines really hot now though?

Those Sauber ones are super tiny.

Wont the engines really hot now though?
Not really. Since the V8s came in the sidepods have got gradually smaller, whether this is to do with the fact they need less cooling, better performing radiators, or the designers allowed a greater tolerance for them in the beginning, I don't know.

My guess is because this will be the 3rd year of these (supposedly) standardised engines which are now almost bullet proof so the designers are starting to push the boundaries of sacrificing engine management for better aero.

Thats a good point.

It'll be interesting to see what happens as the season unfolds though, especially when we get to the hotter races.

Those sidepods really are tiny, aren't they? Shall we take bets on how many laps they'll last at Abu Dhabi/India/Turkey? :p

Ah, I guess they're not quite as extreme as some of the pictures above make them appear. They look positively minuscule in the first pic. Must be all the white paint and the bright lights.
