99% of all fish illness are caused by poor water conditions.
Hence the banning of fairgrounds selling goldfish etc
In any decent pet shop they should ask about filtration / tank sizes and
other things before selling anything.
In this case if no other fish has been added to the set up it probably has
been old age so to speak (organ failure) as they do get used to the conditions around them so this rules out water quality to an extent in this case.
He would swim when you tapped the glass - probably in panic
Adding fish is always problematic as they will have parasites / bugs that you
have not got in the tank and vice versa.
Another common fault is "cleaning the filter under the tap" this kills all the
friendly bacteria the filter is trying to catch.Just rinse it out in some of old
tank water when doing a water change then stick it back in.
