Save my fish!

99% of all fish illness are caused by poor water conditions.

Hence the banning of fairgrounds selling goldfish etc

In any decent pet shop they should ask about filtration / tank sizes and
other things before selling anything.

I've always wondered what happened to our gold fish, can anyone shed some light?

In this case if no other fish has been added to the set up it probably has
been old age so to speak (organ failure) as they do get used to the conditions around them so this rules out water quality to an extent in this case.

He would swim when you tapped the glass - probably in panic ;)

Adding fish is always problematic as they will have parasites / bugs that you
have not got in the tank and vice versa.

Another common fault is "cleaning the filter under the tap" this kills all the
friendly bacteria the filter is trying to catch.Just rinse it out in some of old
tank water when doing a water change then stick it back in.

you spend all this money trying to fix them when you could pay 2 quid for new fish.

i did it with my pet mouse, 2 quid for a mouse, he got a rash thing, cost 15 quid per trip to vet for medicine, 3 trips :/

im not saying you should just kill it and replace it,i love animals, hence me trying to fix my pet mouse. it jus a price comparison. i got all my animals ive had burried at the bottom of the garden even my fish i had, i dont like flushin em down toilet, i wouldnt want to go that way.

well one fish has wedged itself under the plant to stop it floatin to the top, the other is just not doing much. every now and again they have like a mad 30 seconds where they swim around the tank really fast.

one is now head first

the scales look fine and the white bits are only on one fish and not the other

my boyfriend bought some at the same time as me and his are fine, they're being fed exactly the same and they have no pump.

Kept Oranda's for a few years - they are a nightmare.

I used to travel from Scotland to Birmingham to buy these and have paid up
to £80.00 for some of them.

 mine were 2 for a fiver. ones a redcap and the others...orange? haha

Hi,

Without filtration they are basically swimming in there own waste.

You need a filter to give a home to heathy bacterial which will in turn eat
your fish waste turning it in Nitrate which is removed by water changes.

The lack of bouyancy is usually caused by the swim bladder being put under
pressure / not performing properly.

Your fish will be stressed by not being able to swim right hence the darting
about the tank. The fungus can be side condition of the stress as well.

A shelled pea / Epsoms salt crystal / worms might give it a clean out and
return bouyancy other than that it is an infection thats causing the damage.

Also do not feed them for a few days to see it this helps as well.

You can buy Aqualibruim which is a tonic salt which you can add to the
water - this will help with the bouyancy.

Interpet do a swim bladder / anti bacterial medicine which you can try but
chances of it working are slim.

Both these should be available at your local Pets & home etc.

Hope some of this helps you .

DR Fishy lol

go get a small filter and some of that stuff that treats the water, did you say you had an air stone?( blue thing that makes bubbles) if not get one of those(fish love to swim thru it).

do a water change with the new treated water( i had a decent sized tank and use to take the fish out put em in bowls on the table and cleaned the tank proper, took ages scoopin water out in pint glasses, they discovered the hosepipe :p
also u **** feed em pelet type food instead of the flakes if the fish are big enough, helps key the warer clearer.

Hi,

Might be futile but I would.

1.Not feed for 2 days.

2.Buy the Aqualibruim salt - it will tell you how much to add depending on
your size of tank.Add it gradually and follow the instructions.

This will help with both bouyancy and the fungus.

3.As a caution you can buy the medicine listed in my last post as a last
result but the sucess rates are not exactly spectacular.

4.After a couple of days try dropping bits of a shelled pea in front of them.

Remove anything they dont eat.

Also try some small / cut up worms with them.

If all goes well you should vary the feeding

Bloodworms / Brine shrimp can be bought in frozen blister pack

Any flake food should be soaked in tank water before putting in tank.

Keep me informed how they get on.

thanks the water was changed yesterday as altho it was changed less than a week ago it was looking really disgusting. i will try the salts and think i'll get the medication aswell, as if they do get over this its more than likely it will happen again. how much is a filter? im going on holiday a week today so funds are a little squashed at the moment

depending on how big ** tank is u **** get one for <10 for small ish one i think :s not kept fish for a while, if u get one that has an extra 'output' u could hook an air stone up to it to air-ate

thanks for everything guys. I'll keep you all posted on how they're doing.
think i'll lay off the food dor a couple of days.

With regard to filters you only get what you pay for.

Buy the best (that will fit in your tank)

Do you condition the water ?

If not you should buy water conditioner - this makes tap water safe.

Filters take up to 6 weeks to become mature - you can speed this up with
buying "cycle" (concentrated bacteria) from pets at home.

You should never completely clean out a tank - you just destroy the
bactaria.

Little and often is better.

Also never clean the filter sponge in tap water - always use some of the
tank water.

haha the list is getting longer and longer! this could have all been helped if the guy in the shop mentioned any of this stuff. i didnt buy them either, they were given as a gift so i didnt really get much chance to research bout them

Yup It can end up costing a fair bit............

Says the man with a heated pond in Scotland just so that his Japanese
Koi dont feel the cold. :(

You should see the electricity meter spinning in the winter ...it aint for the
fainthearted.

just got back from pets at home! put the stuff in the tank, obviously not all. as soon as the medicine went in the fish swam around like crazy.
i dont say much for the instructions on the packets though.

i guess we can only but see from now on.

had a word with an assistant and she said if i see no improvement, to take a sample of the water in and they'll test it for me

Hi,

Did you get the salt & the medicine ?

How much did you put in ?

Has the balance returned to the fish ?

Did you get conditioner / filter ?

I would not bother taking water in as this is really to test for any issues with
a maturing tank.

You are currently trying to keep them alive by giving them complete water
changes as you dont have a filter system.

You will have massive ammonia / Nitrite readings because of it.

As I have said before some fish will get used to and tolerate this method - it
is hardly ideal but you may get lucky.
