Saving Sessions / Demand reduction thread

Its an odd thing when your annoyed at generation, just goes to show how messed up the process is.

Hopefully with the incoming (unproven) Octopus Solar/battery tariff there is something in there that allows us to really contribute to the savings sessions in a green way.
Such as being paid a sensible amount to send energy to the grid whilst those sessions are running.

Eg cheap charging in the 10 hour window, go on grid during the day, dump batteries during the actual savings session, go back to battery/on grid for remainder of the day.
That needs to be more beneficial to me than gaming the system as we are doing now, to some extent.

IMO its got to come eventually, we are no different to grid storage, why should they get £1 a unit for supplying for peaks and charging when its cheap and homeowners not.

Honestly I'm not that bothered, as I'll probably earn a reasonable amount via export regardless. I mean I've already made over £50 from exports alone.

During the saving session the batteries will be full so I won't be using the grid which ultimately is what this is about. It's just fun to try and squeeze a bit of extra benefit out! :)

No but its messed up, we are all potentially really useful resource and yet not being fully/correctly utilised.

IMO sooner or later someone with some brains is going to push it.
Same as V2G with cars. (Although personally I would be more cautious with a car battery than a home battery, unless/until replacement cell tech comes along, or they are proven to last beyond the economic point of a car to some extent, bit word salad but hopefully makes limited sense ;) )

I think y'all a bit of an edge case of anoraks at the moment (no offence :)).

V2G could commoditise it, if the apps improved significantly to manage this...

No I agree we are, and no offence taken at all

Its just surely now is a good time to work out what would need to be the influence on the home battery storage group before its a more critical mass and messing up the calculation means it fails to achieve its desired result, or people get PPE rich off the scheme ;)

I would hope not actually, in regards recycling old car batteries for home use.

The home storage batteries are a different chemistry and significantly less likely to have fire issues than the car variants.

Reusing them into grid scale storage makes more sense, break them down, test and reuse the decent cells, but then combine into new packs.
Although at grid scale its potentially easier to not break them down and just hook them up with a container full of the same car & battery tech, either the packs themselves, or a remainder of teh chassis for the ones that are basically built into the chassis.
Ie they become semi recycled whilst still of value and only fully recycled when properly "used up"

There is quite a lot of costs involved for a homeowner that can be avoided at grid level. The costs are still there, but as part of ongoing management would be local on site, where as for a homeowner it would be a catastrophic failure in effect.
For many homeowners the storage density is still an issue, having low density storage of a more volatile nature doesn't seem the most logical end usage. Plus as I say you would need to take a different disassembly approach from car to home as opposed to car to grid storage.

Had to concede defeat around 3:30pm
Batteries were full, dishwasher was done, tumble was done, house is warm, solar was generating around 2.5kw still.

So its now diverting solar to the hot water tank and not pulling from the grid.

Should have a little actual usage in the 5:30-6:30 window as late jan/early feb I was still drawing grid units most days (so I timed them to be around 5:30)

The bonus points were from the last two sessions not the one yesterday 30/01 and 7/02

No idea why it takes them so long to credit the points. Its normally 1-2 days after the session points are awarded.

I never even got the points from one of the sessions
Got a cop out answer when I queried if they had messed up my streak with oh they were added to your sessions points. Basically something I couldn't prove/disprove.
Which would be very unusual since someone else did get bonus points, and it would be different to every other session.
Not that I really care, was just principle in regards if I was getting my "draw tickets"

Ten saving sessions completed for 72 earned points. plus 8X100 for the 10 sessions.

No idea why there are 8X100 and not 10X100?

Its 8 because (probably)
The first session had no bonus its a run rate bonus, so you should always have 1 less than the total number of sessions
Your probably didn't get a bonus for the December session, (mid dec). A few have that issue at least I have seen, I am the same.

The bonuses come in a 1-2 days or so after the sessions points are awarded generally.

Mine is
Save sess, bonus points
18/11
28/11, 29/11
5/12, 7/12
5/12, 7/12 (two sessions close together)
14/12, ....
24/01, 25/01
25/01, 26/01
30/01, 13/02
07/02, 13/02
16/02, 16/02

The telly / facebook / mumsnet told me the cap is £2.5k. I can afford £208/month so have my heating on 25 degrees 24/7.

OMG my bill is £700
Thats actually a potentially valid observation.

The try to dumb it down enough that the average dumb Brit gets it, has led to even less understanding on the issue than is needed.

Its like lets tell people the 2 minute TLDR every day for 2 months. Rather than spending 10 minutes once a week really giving them the information to stand some chance of understanding.

However going back to that woman. I can see how should they have a darn inefficient house they could easily burn through lots of gas.

My system will use around 16kwh of gas in the first hour if the house is cold and its pretty cold outside. But as its efficient it then cycles a lot.
Someone on here tested theirs and it ws basically working hard all the time, their house was so bad that it took forever to get warm.
Potentially add in an old inefficient boiler and its not impossible.

This has timed quite nicely for me
Should have done some washing today and didn't due to low solar forecast

Will avoid dishwasher tonight, do the washing early tomorrow then tumble at 1:30
Tomorrow is likely to be damp and not that warm so will likely just fan heater from lunchtime as I am home alone from mid morning.

Solar looks low unlike the last time when it was high during -4 to -1 savings session in day adjustment period.
