Saving Sessions / Demand reduction thread

Decided not to use one this weekend, unless the weather takes a notable turn for the worse.
But I think by next week I will have 5 hours due so I think I will use one weekly from then on unless its a remarkable weekend.

They did pretty much fill up last weekend so I think its a gamble to save too many hours for later.
Plus obviously we had 3 sessions this week so thats an hour and a half right there. If thats by any way a new normal its going to be close to even use up all I have now.

Yeah I think you'll end up falling into a trap of having to use them or lose them. If the slots are supposedly limited in capacity and too many people save their free hours until the last few weekends then it could be a risk of missing out.

Those of us with solar are not really missing out.

The benefit of the import is only 7-8p rather than 26p.

That coupled with losing export at 12p because you have to self consume your solar before you can start getting free grid energy.

You basically have to consume twice as much energy than you are producing to just brake even.

I’m projected to produce 4kwh between 12:00 and 13:00 on Sunday, I’d have to consume 8kwh just to get to zero. Then I’ll only be saving 7p/kwh on any subsequent imports.

Sure I can charge my car and my batteries but even if we consume the full 16kwh, the ‘profit’ is pretty small in reality.

Ironically the largest benefit is probably being able to charge the battery for free and then discharge it against at 12p but even then I can only get ~5.5kwh in and then back out again after losses.

Not all of us, last happy hour I pulled 15.86kWh from grid and generated 6 kWh of solar, all the solar went into the batteries along with some grid import as well. Batteries were at 51% at 14:00 and 81% an hour later, 9.27 kWh in to the battery.

These happy hours clearly benifit those without solar and batteries, or an EV more presuming they can load shift.

I think we are talking about the same thing and perhaps bad phrasing on my part.

You would have generated that energy regardless of the free session or not and you need to do something with it before you can import from the grid. That is fundamentally the point.

But I don't lose any export, I discharge the battery in the morning, to make room, then export the free energy in the evening for 12p

Granted it doesn't add up to much.

Even though I boost charged the car Octopus so far have billed me at off peak, not that it makes any difference.

I decided to take a free hour today and it was a good decision as its cloudy so only did about 3.8kWh of solar in the hour.

I overran a bit and did 16.3kWh in total as the Zappi was laggy for some reason and wouldn't stop charging the car when I asked it to. Close enough though.

You've got GE kit & givTCP yes? If so perhaps you ought to have a play with "Active Power Rate" which will allow you to clip the PV power along with everything else the inverter does.

I tend to use it to shut the PV/battery connections down in a controlled way before going near breakers/switches but if you have a big PV array then you could use that setting to clip it. Whether it'd benefit you - only you know that.

Power Down 6-7pm today (07/09)

61 octopoints

octopoints_per_kwh: 61
target_regions: 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12

In case it helps to clarify, these ‘target_regions’ are the NESO DFS zones specified in https://www.neso.energy/document/385526/download

Where can you find the target regions that they're looking at doing for a saving session.

I'm in region 5 so I guess we'll miss out on a saving session tonight.

Typical we miss out again. Really poor week there's not been a single session.

I'm going to out of spite put my dishwasher on at 7pm

Predbat auto enrolled me for that! I thought predbat was broken it had a $ and weird pricing in that slot and AI suggested I'd broken it.. turns out it was a power down, and checking my Octoplus, I participated in another yesterday without knowing, although its still 'calculating'..

I'm very new to all this, I've got predbat kind of working, lots of debugging etc, but its doing its thing and auto enrolled..

The next thing is I thought Axle VPP events did not support Tesla, but I see they do support Home Assistant and I think predbat sorts it out..

So, seems a stupid question, but I assume I should be signed up ASAP? or not..?

I'm on IoG import, Octopus Variable Export (AKA 12p)..

Also surely with batteries/solar which tend to discharge every evening to empty by the off-peak 23:30, these power down events surely can't be worth much since your baseline is likely to be heavily swamped by your battery export? Or is that just us noobs using predbat?
