Say NO to windows 10 because of this ...

That page makes no reference to Windows 7 and Windows 8 was a disaster anyway.

The link (predictably) didn't give the full story.

If you do some digging this seems to be the tracking that was in the W10 preview but they seem to have rolled it back into 7 and 8 (and server) in the run up to the W10 release as optional update without highlighting it.

Well said, many people don't bother to read the T&C for any OS.

Wouldn't have helped in this case as the only way to spot this was to look up the description of the update then research it on-line. How many people do that for every MS updates.

Because MS have been releasing a massive amount of updates in the last year, I've turned off automatic updates and selected which updates I want. Particularly with driver updates which can often have a negative impact. The sheer volume of updates is slowing machines and networks to a crawl so you have to be selective about you want.

But yeah most people will just accept everything.

Yup did the same thing,

This bit below is what I thought was really weird..

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to,”

Great OS but not giving up my right to privacy on my own PC to use it lol.

Back to Windows 7, maybe move over to Steam OS in a few years. Or maybe MS will release a non spyware version of W10 at some point. I would be up for buying it then.

Going to back to Windows 7 won't help as they've add this stuff back to Win 7. Unless you didn't install the update. You can disable it. If that does indeed disable it.

What's the update called in Windows 7?

I have all latest updates but I don't have that process running that the other link showed, is it different under W7?

Using Windows 7 X64 Enterprise.

Not using Windows 10 because of these changes is ridiculous and naive IMHO. Your information is already being harvested by a plethora of other organisations, including Microsoft (yes, even if you use pre-Windows 10).

That and most of the tracking stuff can be turned off fairly easily.

You might as well give up your drivers license, as the DVLA are selling off your data to many bidders :P

To be honest, your data will be everywhere already. So your really achieving nothing with this stance. I'll carry on enjoying Windows 10, and not care where may data has gone. You can't stop it.

Can't find any mention of Windows 7 the link he posted is for Windows 8.1.

I like the part where they grant themselves the right to access your computer to protect "customers", I'm sure the movie/music industry will be one of their biggest customers so Windows 10 users should probably avoid torrenting.

Google is a wonderful thing ;)

I assume if you got it or not will depend on what patches you've installed and in what order. As often one patch depends on another being installed.

Yeah that's what I thought. I'm happy with W7 tbh, 10 is a nice OS but I'm no rush to sign away basic privacy.

Lol, I know man. I don't understand people defending this. Each to their won though. I'll stick with W7 until either a non spyware version of W10 is released or until Steam OS matures. I think W7 has support until 2020, so I'm pretty sure other options will be around by then lol.

Thanks for the update. I must find and nuke this thing right now lol :D

Got ya !!!

Found and nuked..

For good measure,

Run CMD.

Then type

sc stop DiagTrack

Press Enter

sc delete DiagTrack

Press Enter

Type Exit.

Hopefully that's the end of it, Linux or Steam OS is looking mighty tempting at this point lol.

So the spyware update for Windows 7 and 8.1 includes all this good stuff...

Name, email address, preferences and interests, browsing, search and file history, phone call and SMS data, device configuration and sensor data, application usage.

Um... People surely aren't happy about this right? Phone calls, SMS data and your interests, MS collecting this data from users worldwide I assume to share with the non disclosed groups. This not a bit weird? Even if you don't wear a tin foil hat, surely this is an odd thing? ...

Some of it they already capture in other ways. If you haven't circumvented it.

But this the first time they've put it right in the middle of the OS AFAIK.

You know much about Ubuntu? I don't game much these days so that wouldn't be an issue, but what is CPU performance like, are there video encoding programs. Does Ubuntu also make you sacrifice all privacy to use it? Lol.

First time I'm seriously considering an alternative to Windows. (Tried Steam OS once but couldn't get on with it. Prefer proper desktop).
