I worked as an apprentice baker for about 2 years, summer job. Despite the early mornings I thought it was fantastic. Had a lot of fun and the workload was really non-stop, so the day flew by.
Start off making hundreds of sausage rolls to go into the oven, prepare a few bread mixes, make a few trays of pastries (cones etc), then spend an hour or so making literally hundreds of pastry shells for buns.
Now, sort out the walk-in fridge and freezer (BBBRRRRR!!!) and store away any produce not immediately being used.
Next, slice, pack and label the fresh loaves, then off to the "Cream Room" to do all the lovely cake-related goodness. Once these were made, seperate the lot into the individual orders for our retail outlets, then package and send 'em off in the van! All of this in one day, not to mention free buns and sausage rolls galore.
Decent wages too, but by the end of the week you were completely knackered. Truth be told though, I don't think I could have found a better summer job and I really did feel at the end of the week that I'd earned my money, and was being paid fairly for what I did.
Thinking about it, it almost makes me wish I'd never gone into IT!
