SB-E Review

Well, I don't see why you should get this over the 2500K considering they can clock about the same. Only people with too much cash would buy this... Or they really do need the extra cores such as encoding or VMs.

Either way I don't see a reason for most people to buy this *pats his 2600K*.

The 12 thread Core i7-3960X is only 17% faster than a 8 thread Core i7 2600K in productivity applications:

In the best case scenario with multi-threaded applications the Core i7-3960X is around 35% faster.

It is 28% faster than a Core i5 2500K and 32% faster than a FX8150 too:

All these CPUs are £170 to £250. The Core i7-3960X is around £800 IIRC and has more expensive motherboards too.

On top of this the Core i7-3960X is only 12% faster than a Core i7 990X:

The Core i7 990X is also a 32NM CPU.

Idle is quite depressing, load figures are a bit OTT.

I'm hoping that's only present in the ES chips, and that the retail are better, probably won't be like.

SB-E, not quite as fast as you'd hope over SB, but given how much faster it is than BD, will probably be forgiven.

Forget about BD look at the Core i7 2600K and Core i7 2700K!!

When the IB based socket 1155 Core i7 CPUs are out it is going to make the Core i7 3960X look even worse. By the time IB-E or whatever it is called is released,Haswell will be probably be available too.

Oh, I know it's pretty horrendous.

For the performance increase over the 2600k, it's not worth it from my stand point, again, Ivy will only make it look worse.

HardOCP said that their 4.8Ghz voltage was left at auto which was 1.48V, rjkoneill in the other thread has 4.8Ghz at 1.37V, that will have a big impact on power consumption.

That review shows it consuming less than the BD system, but 200W more than the 1155 counter parts.

The idle power consumption is really high when overclocked. It seems to confirm what HardOCP and TweakTown also saw.

When overclocked both Core i7 CPUs when running at idle are consuming more power than a Core i7 2600K at load when at stock speeds.
