SB-E Review

The one thing which is makeing me a bit worried is the 500w plus at load when overclocked, still lower than bulldozer tho!

Priced up a system and its only £254 more than similar 2700k (plus extra £60for more memory) and it has a better motherboard too (x79 sabertooth)

really dont know which way to go.

The idle power consumption is really high when overclocked. It seems to confirm what HardOCP and TweakTown also saw.

When overclocked both Core i7 CPUs when running at idle are consuming more power than a Core i7 2600K at load when at stock speeds.

The results are pretty much all over the place :p.

Interesting results so far - pretty much what people had predicted: Impressive performance, but not worth the cost.

I did want this, but its not worth it over a 2500k for gaming and the hex cores cost too much.

The quad core SB-E wont be any better at all for gaming than a 2500k, and the quad channel ram does absolutely nothing for games either :(

I dont really think its worth going from my R3E + I7 920 > a 2500k build either, so I'm more than convinced to skip a whole gen :)

..... LGA 1366 hex core price cuts would be sweet if they ever happen.

I would have been best off with an I5 build, but back when I got my current stuff the I7 920 D0 came out well in advance of the I5s.

It would be best to just add a couple of Keplers next year to my 4.2 Ghz I7 920 :)

Thats a good question, FSX eats CPU power as well as GPU power.

The thing is, i got a slight drop from i7 930 to i5 2500K

Not sure if i'm imagining things or if hyperthreading had something to do with it :(

If FSX would really benefit, or any other simulators, then i'll shell out for one.

would the extra cores help in anything else?

I'm coming for you wkingsnorth!!!

I'm very happy to see a lot of you paying attention to power consumption.

Are there any reliable idle figures out there ?

Yea in the Xbit review I just posted, heres the page:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i7-3960x-3930k_11.html#sect0

Loads more power consumed over 2600k / 2700k, barely any extra performance for gaming, and as we all know, theres no difference between a 2500k and 2600k for gaming either.

So now we will just have to see if IB is any better. 22nm chips, if the perf and power consumption is a lot better, I might get that just to reduce energy costs.

Well FSX is one of those games that I dont give a hoot about, but a while back there was a spec me thread just for this game and it was a debate between 2500K/2600K (hyperthreading), I risked becoming a complete nerd and entered a few forums of flightsim enthusiasts to see if there was any answer. What I found was a few test with a 920 with Hyperthreading ON/OFF and there was a noticeable difference.

SOOOOooooooooooooooooooo...............

Stick with the 2500/2600k then :D

Yup, or stick with your LGA 755 / 1366 quads at least until IB :)

Though it doesnt look like IB will be much better performance wise, the die shrink should bring significant power reductions and higher overclocks.

Yup this is worthwhile reason to upgrade, let's face it, our PCs spend 90% of their lives in idle

Snip from wikipedia ...

Ivy Bridge feature improvements from Sandy Bridge were expected to include:[15]
Tri-gate transistor technology (up to 50% less power consumption)

If IB has 50% less power consumption than SB I upgrade, OMG!

My I7 920 is power hungry and wasteful, but a 2500k wasnt better enough.
