Scaffolding (Ear piercing) - Anyone had it done?

I just prefer my other piercings. In retrospect I should've had a different angle. The healing process/care-taking is ok as long as you have 2 separate pieces of jewellery in there until it's healed. Learned that the hard way.

I hate learning the hard way. :p I made a few enquiries today and both piercers (is that the correct term?) said they'd put a single bit of bendy plastic tubing through the holes to be kept in for about 4 weeks after which it would be okay to put in a bar. If I choose to go ahead, should I insist on having two separate bars in place for a couple of weeks?

I'll ring around elsewhere in that case. How long would a cartilage piercing take to heal? 2 months?

Say I got it done and let it partially heal for about 3 or 4 weeks. Would inserting a bar then cause any side effects or is it absolutely necessary to let it heal 100% before introducing metal? It's just that I don't fancy having a gash looking bit of plastic in my ear for months!

Thanks :)

1. piercers is correct :p
2. bendy plastic = PTFE
3. I always find that any type of plastic in a piercing is more likely to cause irritation. I'm one of those who's not especially allergic to things, but plastic (acrylic, pmma, ptfe, some silicone) really irritates my piercings! When I get pierced, I only use stainless steel or blackline (with the exception of my dermal punch, which has a custom made plastic tunnel in for the extra length)
4. I would say 4 weeks isn't long enough. Depends how quickly you heal, but mine wasn't ready for the longer bar by then. 8-12 is a pretty decent guide.

Obviously, that's only based on my experience, which isn't going to be as much as a good piercer, but it works for me! Also obvious, but don't let them near you if they're using a gun. Needles only, and anything less than 1.6mm and I'll be calling your sexuality into question (2.4 if you can find a bar).

The reason you have to wait until it's healed to put the bar in is slightly different than with a piercing with only one hole - the bar will use each hole as a lever whilst it's healing if one heals faster than the other, which will cause irritation and make the healing process longer.

my gf had one - it made her ear very nasty and she had to go to hospital to get it removed - avoid

That makes sense. So to avoid having a bit of PTFE in there, it should be fine to put a bar (say 8 or 10mm?) in there until all healed? I'd much rather have some metal in there than plastic.

As for care, I had my eyebrow pierced about 8 years ago and pretty much gave it a rub with a cotton bud and some Savlon twice a day. I assume this should suffice or is there anything else I should be aware of?

Sorry about all the questions, this isn't something I want to screw up!

you could get it pierced with the metal, just say that's your preference as you think ptfe is ghey. I *think* I used 10mm barbells, but it depends on the thickness of your helix.

My aftercare regime is different for cartilage piercings. I use rock salt dissolved in hot-ish boiled water with a cotton bud twice a day, then once the healing gets under way, I start using 80% tea tree oil on a cotton bud twice a day.

No worries about the questions - I love talking about piercings :D

Excellent, thanks :D

I might take the plunge and pay someone to stab me tomorrow. I'll update if I do.

I don't know why, but you always struck me as the sort of person who would despise tattoos and stuff like that. It's be interesting to see what angle you go for and stuff. That's the only thing I regret about mine; the angle is stupid.

I'm still wanting this done but my first peircing has pretty much just healed and I got in done about 2 years ago. I did get it on the side I sleep on though, so I wasn't being very clever

Did the OP finally get it done?

I know, whatever will the chaps at Yacht Club think!;)

I already have a big tattoo on my arm of a motocross bike and rider jumping through flames in quite an old school style. A bit of metal is minor in comparison:)

It looks gash to me, I can't see any reason why you'd do it other than to be "cool" or get some attention, it really doesn't look good.

Having said all that, each to his own. :p

 :p
Wow, it's random a thread of mine gets bumped...i didn't get it done and so far just have a stud on my bottom lip on my right hand side. Still considering it but haven't got the time to invest in it currently. :)
