Scariest Game you have ever played?

This thread seems to be split between those who've played amnesia and are saying it's the scariest game ever, and those who haven't and are saying other stuff :p.

In fact, I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they've played anything scarier than amnesia, because I loved every minute of it and I want to find a similar experience :).

Aliens on the commodore 64. Admittidaely I was only young playing it and gfx are a "bit " basic :p but it was so tense!
Anyone else play it!??

Scary "newer" game in no particular order

Penumbra
Amnesia The dark descent
Aliens vs Predator (as the Marine)
System shock 2
Dead Space
Quake

I want to find a similar experience :).

Have you played the Penumbra series? (from the creators of amnesia)

SpaceChem. A-level Chemistry is coming back to haunt me :p

I'll vote for Amnesia and Silent Hill 2. I really should play them again, but I'd need to connect up my PS2 for SH2 and I just can't be bothered. Doom 3 had 1 level that was genuinely scary and atmospheric and the odd bit of cinematic where blood filled up the room and such that were creepy but the rest wasn't scary in the slightest, it just made you jump now and then by suddenly attacking you, but they were seriously overused and predictable.

I didn't play that one but I always wanted to. On the 64 I had the other Aliens game in which each level was a set-piece from the film (e.g. the first level was landing the dropship on LV-426).

Yeah, good call. I own all the Penumbra games, but again, totally wimped out after playing through the first half an hour of the first one. :D

Try Clive Bakers Undying or perhaps Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth I found both far better than Amnesia with a much stronger story.

EDIT: 11th Hour and The 7th Guest are old but good.

I completely forgot about silent hill and resident evil.

For silent hill the bit that sticks in my mind is a hospital/asylum? where you get those zombie nurse things and of course pyramid head. That game is just so dark and gloomy. I think it gave me the creeps more than actually scaring me.

With resident evil it was when you see the first zombie and it turns it's head to look at you in all its pixelated glory. That used to freak me out. Oh and being chased by those dog things!

Found it....that's it then, no sleep for me tonight! :p

I think it was Resident evil 2/3. Remember the bit at the start where you see your first licker in the police station..

I heard it got mixed reviews, or at least Amnesia was an improvement. I will certainly give it a try though at some point :).

The consensus seems to be that the first game is great but has slightly clumsy combat, not bad enough to destroy the game though. And the series only improves after that (and they dropped the combat).

For what it's worth, I can say that in the little bit I played of the first Penumbra, I was able to get past hostiles using methods other than hitting them.

That was Resident Evil 2.

It was terrifying, I had a licker jump through a one-way mirror on me when I was 11 or so.

The game was promptly turned after that. :p

Resident Evil kept me on the edge of my seat.

When it comes to scares in games there is of course the jump out of your seat moments but also the nervous anticipation that something is about to happen.

I agree with the comments that Silent Hill is more plain ****ed up and creepy, whereas Resident Evil is more scary and has bits where you shout out loud 'Oh ****' when something jumps through a window.

Silent Hill was good.
Resident Evil (the old ones with pre-rendered backgrounds) were epic.
