Scary in-car video from Japanese Tsunami

Why the hell did they just sit in the car when theres buildings around then?

rabbit in the headlights moment, they probably just froze in abject terror, understandable tbh, the speed & scale of the Tsunami caught every body out, & that's saying something as Japans a nation that's been training for such things for decades.

Shocking stuff. Love the guy who goes back to shut his car door near the start! Stuff that.

I wonder what happened to the guy that jumped and done a runner. And would love to see how on earth did this guy survive.

I would have been bricking it in there as the car moved towards that fast flowing channel

It's not an easy call. There are 10 seconds from seeing water till it reaches the car from behind, then in another 10 seconds it reaches the point where surviving on foot is not viable. Remember fast flowing water up to your knees, even without floating pallets and other debris, can easily knock you off your feet.

Had he acted immediately and made the decision it would be a bad tsunami he could have driven at the building in front, probably found it open and found the emergency stairs in time but it is still not a sure thing.

I could easily procrastinate 10 seconds wondering the best course of action when presented by that event and by then staying in the car is your only option until things calm down.

Scary video!

That is terrifying.

Any Japanese speakers give us a translation? Particularly the script at the end. Doesn't look good for the guy :(

The guy survives - rough translation can be found here

Mr. Muroga’s car was swept approximately 150 meters into the wall of a warehouse before sinking. Mr. Muroga, while being swept along by the current, managed to swim to a nearby building and pull himself from the water.

Really lucky that he stayed in the car then, seems it was just hit and miss if you'd float or if the car was doomed.
Id have stayed in the car, not through choice, just because I'd be too scared to move upon seeing a giant wave of water destroying everything around me.

I would have got out quickly and gone up a building rather than stay in the vehicle. Just look at the vehicles bashing each other at 1:00.

refer to britboy's post.

Watching the video with hindsight, it's easy to make that call but for the guy in his car, how the hell is he supposed to know that it was going to get that bad that fast! Not to mention that if it can fling cars about like they're made of plastic I'm sure you'd be swept away pretty quickly too.

That's nuts. You can see loads of people on the big building in front watching it all happen, must have been surreal.
