So I'm finally in a position to buy a DAC / amp / headphones / speakers. Previously from this thread I settled on...

Sennheiser HD650
Edifier R1600T III
Schiit Magni 2 Uber
Schiit Modi 2
Schiit PYST RCA

One final question:

Would I notice much of a difference swapping out the amp / DAC combo for a Schiit Fulla 2 and still using the 650s? Price difference would be:

(£150 + £110 + £17.5) = £277.5
vs
£110

I'm just trying to understand the difference and is it worth the additional £167.5. The input will be Spotify Premium at 320kbps

Thanks!

Cheers guys, the stack it is, I'm not going to cheap out at the last hurdle. It'd be lovely though for the 650s to drop a bit on the Rainforest ;) Brexit and the pound dropping have taken them way high for my liking.

You're spot on, they were £232 as well when I started out looking last September.

One other thing that's a bit annoying is the change in material/finish from the Modi 2 and Magni 2 Uber. I have no requirement for multiple inputs so don't see a need for a Modi 2U, so it'd be £40 just for a matching finish on them both, not worth it I don't think...

Although saying this, I've just found an example picture of them both... What do you reckon...

rids57 - out of curiosity, do you switch off your amp/dac/speakers when you're done e.g. overnight? Or is this overkill? Tbh I let my Dell monitor go to sleep but I don't imagine these devices have this feature ;)

Also, high gain or low gain for 650s?

As always appreciate your advice :)

The different finishes would irk me. Go with one finish or the other. I have a Schiit stack also, and turn the amp off when I'm not using. My Modi is connected with USB so turns off with my PC.

I'd wait for the 650 to drop. £320 is too much really, when they could come back down to the usual £240 or so soon enough. Both 600 and 650 prices fluctuate quite a bit.

I turn the amp off but that's mostly because the LED annoys me when I'm watching videos from the recliner. I leave my speakers on 24/7 and don't even touch the volume control.

If you're willing to wait there is always Massdrop who are selling the HD6XX, which is their own, custom colour (black) version for $200 + $15 shipping, though there will likely be import duty on them when they hit our shores.

Just in case anyone is interested, Schiit replied to another email on the topic:

DACs more than amps benefit from being at a constant stable temperature, they also heat up slower.

So I guess I'll switch off the amp and leave the DAC and speakers on... I presume this is what we all do right :D

I think I'm going to leave the DAC on, Edifier R1600T on (as per rids57 above), and just switch the amp off. One thing to switch off, easy!

Well, I've finally purchased the Edifier R1600T III... It just so happens OcUK have them on a weekly deal with 9% off at the moment ;)

They sound great! They're smaller than I thought they would be, not in a bad way just pleasantly surprised. Fairly deep but not big front on, then again I came from the towering Creative T40s.

They sound great. The vocals sound like they're coming from my monitor / directly in front of me. They sound really clear and not constrained. The various instruments feel more separated than I noticed on the T40s. The bass is thumping when cranked up, compared to the fake bass of the T40s; not that I'm particularly after this. Something like Breathe / The Prodigy really gets the speakers thumping.

I'm not sure if it's just me but the placement of each speaker and where I sit seems to make a noticeable difference, if one's further back or I'm not sitting fairly central it seems noticeable. Maybe I've just got a dodge right ear :D Maybe someone could do me a favour with your 1600T's.. Can you listen to R. Kelly (I know - I'm sorry, it's just most noticeable so far on this song), and tell me if the hand symbol instrument is 90% coming out your left speaker? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAXxkNaRkp8 skip to 40 seconds in. If so then I'll know if my right tweeter is broke... (I know YouTube quality is bad but it sounds the same on Spotify Premium too)

This is all based on only a couple of hours listening so maybe more to come if/when drivers loosen up.

Maybe improvements too when I hook up the Modi 2U, come on Rainforest, drop your price of the HD650s so I can buy the job lot in one! Still annoyingly at £319, not keen on paying much over £250.

R1600T II here and yes, the triangle is coming from just inside the left speaker.

I have mine either side of my 40" TV, which also doubles as my monitor (and works fine for both). I have the speakers plugged into both the PC and the TV and they work extremely well for both at the desk and sitting back in my recliner.

Mine are on wooden blocks that lift them around 4" off the desk and I use humongous blobs of Blutak as a dampening material between speakers and blocks, which reduces any boominess in the bass. Imaging is good, specially for the price and explains why placement is important because as you move the speakers around, the individual instruments get moved too.

So rather annoyingly I've come to realise my speakers aren't balanced. The left speaker is louder / dominates and everything appears louder to the left hand side and not centred. Using 'Control Panel > Sound > Levels > Balance' I've figured out if I set the left speaker down from 100 to 80-84 this fixes Spotify / Youtube etc.

Surely this can't be right can it? This can't be normal?

What volume is the Magni 2 Uber set on? If the volume is set low (first 15% or so), it can cause channel imbalance - turn the volume on the speakers down and the Magni up and see if it makes a difference
