Paul Scholes has decided it is time for him to hang up his boots and retire from playing football.

Paul was part of the new wave of talent that came through to the first team during the mid-90's. He scored twice on his debut in the League Cup at Port Vale in the 1994/95 season and since then has enjoyed a long a successful career, making an incredible 676 appearances for the Club.

Paul will take on a coaching role with the Club from the start of next season. Fans will also have the opportunity to see Paul play again at Old Trafford in his testimonial match in August.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "What more can I say about Paul Scholes that I haven't said before. We are going to miss a truly unbelievable player. Paul has always been fully committed to this Club and I am delighted he will be joining the coaching staff from next season. Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role."

Paul Scholes said: "I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour. This was not a decision that I have taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing. To have been part of the team that helped the Club reach that 19th title is a great privilege.

Suppose the time was always going to come, he was quite the player! Seriously great.

Right move and he can still offer something to the club. Not really his biggest fan but was part of one of the best CM partnerships the EPL has seen (..with Keane).

Small and ginger though. Quite surprised he hasn't cheated on his wife as seemingly is the norm these days.

Very sad day for football. Depressing season for us. VDS, Nev and now Scholesy...
The times, they are a changing.

I can't imagine what it's going to be like when Giggsy and Fergie finally call it quits. This is the Manchester United I grew up with.

Even as an Arsenal fan this is a sad day. He's one of the few Man Utd players I have total respect for. Great player on the pitch, great guy off the pitch. And I'm really going to miss those Scholesy tackles come flying in.

Sad day, in his prime the best midfielder England have produced for years his range of passing today is still second to none

As much as it hurts to say this though it was time as his contribution to the team was less and less with each given week

Legend though

One of the best in his position of all time.

The huge positive here is him staying on staff in a coaching role.
Hope he has a good testimonial to send him off like Nev did.

Absolute united legend and one of the best passers ever. His technique was sublime at his peak. I was hoping he would retire to force fergies hand in the transfer window as his contributions haven't been amazing this year.

Legend.

always remember the goal against us (villa) when he hit in 25+ yards on the volley

Great player, fantastic career as good as any Englishman can have had really in the last 20 years or so. Lets hope Anderson can step up to the plate and fill those boots now.

What a great player and servant for English football and the premier league. A true legend both as a player and as a person who is dedicated and devoted to his family and club. Thanks for such great memories. Glad to hear he is staying at the club as a coach as he has so much still to give to younger players.

Quite surprised he hasn't cheated on his wife as seemingly is the norm these days.

For me Scholes has always been what I wanted all footballers to be. He loves to play football and he happens to have a job that paid him well to do it. He didn't like the attention, the fuss, the press and so didn't seek it out. I don't recall EVER seeing a headline about him and I think he only ever appeared in a couple of commercials.

Scholes for me is more like the average man on the street than the vast majority of footballers these days and it's sad tht more aren't like him in that respect.

It's been a pleasure to see him play over the years.

On the flip side, not having him in the centre of the park means someone with more legs can get more games. Much like when Keane left it means the other CM wasn't having to run around for him.
