I think in the sense his name was never as "big" as some of the other players at United they were nominated ahead of him.
 
I think it's much the same way that Xavi has never really been considered for the same awards until his team started dominating everyone. Although a fantastic player, they're not as exciting as the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, or all the other attacking midfielders/wingers/strikers that generally get the awards.

90% of the time, to win the Ballon d'Or you have to be really good at dribbling. :p
 
Scholes on tackles - "I was genuinely trying to get the ball... most of the time." Legend :D

He's such a brilliant example to any young kid who wants to become a professional football - quiet, unassuming and just gets it done on the pitch.
