Scholes officially retires staying on as a coach

I didn't see the shirt swapping but this was from the manutd.com site. interesting that all those players were after his shirt if true

I can believe that, there was an interview with Iniesta in the free Sport magazine where he described the esteem with which Scholes is held - maybe he was trying to flatter him before the final but it's been said often enough and by enough people to make me think there's something behind it.

I thought he said on several occasions he wanted to play for Oldham before he retired?

I thought that too but maybe he's decided he just can't perform at a sufficient level any more?

Anyway he's one of the best midfielders of his generation and possibly of all time but maybe he's not been recognised quite as much as he would have if he were a more gregarious character.

The Scholes-Oldham link turned out to be nonsense, I believe his Dad was a fan not him.

Tiote for Newcastle?

14 yellows this season

Kevin Davies commited like 50% more fouls this season than Tiote, something nuts like 125 vs 78 or something, Davies has pretty much been the highest fouling player in the league every year since he started.

Scholes is great, as for not being well regarded, as you can see from the quotes he really is well regarded everywhere but the UK. He's not "celeb" enough to be considered the best by your average English pratt.

I've always said he's a simply outstanding player, as for can't tackle, people do seem to miss the difference between can't tackle and wants to make a yellow card type foul ;)

Like Vidic, he can be a beast in a tackle but when he wants to foul he's up their with the best of them.

Its a shame he hasn't been at his best for quite a while, thats largely because of the role he's been asked to play so often, the almost blind for a season thing, never really being quite first team since and really not having the right central midfielders around him for the past 3 seasons to let him really do his thing.

Bit of a daft quote up there, I don't rate him with Ronaldo as he always has 10 great players around him......... Scholes is great but when has he played with a crap team around him? Both of them would be in my all time greats player list without a question.

Unreal player for United and England. Always been intrigued to see how he would have developed had Fergie not moved him back into midfield at the start of 96/97, could have been a completely different story. The way he came back in 06/07 after his eye problems was excellent too.

Another of the 99 team disappears. One left :(

I'd have liked to have seen how England would have developed if he hadn't been shifted out wide in favour of a more British stereotype midfield by Sven.

a lot of professionals believe that in actual fact PS timed every tackle to perfection (for right or wrong)

(just for the record I got the joke - but some believe it was as much bad timing, which may well not be the case)

An incredible player. Im glad he decided to retire though.

As others have said he could easily have remained a forward and was the best finisher at the club when he broke through.

You feel (all joking aside) that if he wasnt quiet and ginger he would probably have been widely accepted as one of the true greats wordwide. Maybe a bit more of the Beckham profile would have seen that happen although as a Man Utd fan im very glad it didnt.

He's accepted as a true great by people that really know their stuff, and not the media idiots. Surely that's all the matters?

Oh yeah absolutely. I just sometimes feel he doesnt get the recognition he deserves because he is such a shy annonymous type off the field which is probably a little unfair.

Although having said that i think Beckham sometimes suffers from quite the opposite and people are quick to dismiss him as a player because of his pop image.

one of the best passers and strikers of the ball ever.

screw xavi and iniesta, scholes is were its at.

still remember his volley from beckhams corner. ball in, bang, goal.

Legend.

Out of interest was Scholes ever nominated for World player of the year or anything? Was he ever recognised in the rest of the world (so to speak)?
