Schools - LOST THE PLOT?

Not true. Back when my sister was in high school she and a number of friends began to wear grey trousers in one of the harsh sub-zero winters we had. The school 'policy' mandated a skirt for girls and grey trousers for boys. After various rants and threats from the school involving isolation and exclusion, a single letter from a solicitor pointing the school to the ECHR was enough for them to apologise and 'amend their policies' to be equal between the sexes.

Dictating a child's haircut is equally stupid. I went through school in the 80s and early 90s with everything from a skinhead to full on grown out and nobody said a word.

That's drastic! But also the first I have ever heard of that.

I am sure it is coincidence that every kid I have taught that has a similar haircut are problematic with poor attitude to learning...

Every kid? Really? I'm sure you're not judging them based purely on their haircut or anything...

Its ridiculous that the OP has the temerity to post this thread having given his son such a ridiculous haircut which is clearly against a documented school policy (not to mention common sense).

Honestly, in my opinion, you should be given a hefty fine if you want him returned to classes before it grows back.

Or alternatively just stop worrying about other people's hair and what 'they' deem acceptable to their tastes and subculture, and just concentrate on education. Perish the thought.

Exactly, the school is an place of education, the haircut is not extreme and doesnt cause offense to anybody. Surely having short hair of the side of his head doesnt mean that he cannot learn safely in class without disruption to others - why punish him for it!

I'm not arguing with the fact that the hair is shorter than what the school deems acceptable, shortness is objective, maybe make it more clear with an objective min lenght for hair, and then everybody knows clearly.

But my point still remains, do not punish him for it.

I remember when Beckham shaved his hair, loads of lads at my school got temporary suspensions for copying it.

The parent/s all complained, nothing changed. They even accosted us outside of school and asked us to show "solidarity" towards our fellow pupils and shave our heads.

I may not like the choice of haircut but I think them placing him into isolation for having it is some form a knee jerk reaction, a kind of "this is what happens" style message.

Pretty pathetic from them tbh

I haven't been teaching that long but unfortunately yes, every kid. I have also started to learn some names are generally problematic too.

Yeah. You can guarantee nearly every kid with an 'alternative' spelling is destined to be a complete tool Or prime kyle fodder for example.

My school would never have accepted this. I'm sure others will be able to say the same.

It's not a case of schools getting worse on the matter. Uniform policies have almost always had hair guidelines as people do take the mick.

Well, it's good to know our teachers are giving all kids an equal chance to learn, despite what name they may have been given or haircut they've had.

Lol cry much? how're they not receiving an equal chance to learn?

imho thats not a great haircut for a 12 year old - its a fashion or statement haircut and not for any practical purpose. It is shaved as it wasn't done with scissors and to say 10mm isnt short but 5mm is seems a bit silly. My son's school (he is year 10) are equally clear on uniform and haircuts and 99% of the kids seem to be able to deal with it.

i am sure i am not alone!
