Every school has a uniform and many a haircut policy, this is not an isolated bunch of nutters. You will need a time machine or the ability to reanimate if you want the originators to be held to account. I am a little suprised at the general outcry from the "haircutgate apologist" camp over such over such an obvious blunder by the parents.
He has a fully shaved head - keep up!
You should be able to have whatever haircut you like, obviously nothing like dying hair. Not sure what people are questioning the haircut... I'm sure some of the people on here have worse haircuts. Maybe the ones slating the haircut are jealous?
What do you base this distinction on?

Why no to dying hair? (I can understand some extreme circumstances, we used to have a 2 colour rule in School) people in the work place can have dyed hair.
Just because a policy exists, doesn't make it correct.
Where there is a rule, we should expect it to be upheld. But, whilst raging against the decision is fruitless, we can still rail against the rule itself. Because it's ********.
The point is everyone will have different cut off points.
There will always be someone who would want to allow more than that. How do teachers decide what crosses a line which differs from person to person?
It is easier to make a simple rule.

Doesn't that make the rules arbitrary? Why would you be held to your "highest standard" between 11-16, it makes no sense.

Ok I am done. To summarise and distil to the two key questions here:
1) Should parents and kids be able to ride rough shod over school rules? Absolutely not if the rules are normal as this is.
2) I do not understand the "first it is the haircut, next Naxism" tone. It's not that big a deal.

You opened the door with "acts of Parliament" so what I've stated are all within acts of Parliament. Which like YOU said, are all legal.
As opposed to you know, school policy.
You have an exact specification on what is and isn't allowed? What jewelry and tattoos are allowed? What size? Specifications for clothing as well while you are at it?
You have no idea how much harder this is, especially when kids and parents will look for loopholes within this complex set of rules.
It is easier to have a simple set of rules, easy to follow and doesn't actually hurt anyone.
As has been mentioned the 99% of kids manage to follow these rules

Not when the same hair cut is 100% accepted at the school she works at!!!!
As for the rule I was not aware of this rule, my wife was not either.
I have no issue if the school contacted me or my wife and said don't cut it this way again as it's not what we consider suitable then fine we would comply.
But when he is punished and made to sit on his own for something which is not of his doing will do two things. Make him unhappy about the punishment which instantly would cause hI'm not to want to sit and learn his work that he has been given aen.and also he won't learn as well in isolation as in his class. In a class it is interactive and children learn better with interactivity when sat in silence in a "nnaughty room" environment and told to just work from sheets of paper whilst an enforcement person ensures that he is silent means he will be less inclined to want to study during this time. And at lunch/break time he is confined to the isolation room too.
At the end of the day my issue isn't the rule break but how it's been handled. Especially when the rule in question is open to interpretation, and it's a thing that doesn't cause issues for another school in the same area.

My statement was relating to hair, not sure where the tattoo and jewelry coming into that... However you should be able to dye your hair whatever colour you like, i do understand there should be set rules to prevent abuse. No hair styles like a mohican dyed pink which would look unpresentable. But with the hair style of the OP's son i don't see what the issue is, it may not be to everyones taste but why should something that's subjective be a rule?

Hmm, you've said transgender discrimination would be okay for a teacher, an employee in a school - which is surely not correct?
I'm not sure what school policy has to do with that. If you are saying actually the law has an exclusion for teachers in a school, in which case that would be the law, and not a school policy.
Likewise if part of the human rights act applies to a specific situation, and you can bring a case, the school rules don't matter. I'm not exactly going out on a limb here am I?
Your statement may be around hair, but it extends to everything about a uniform policy.
Why is a mohican not allowed but half of one is allowed? Why is dying your hair allowed but not pink?
