Scotland take control of own taxes?

I think I'm right in saying that for years all the tax revenue from north sea oil was a fair bit below the extra money Scotland receives from English taxpayers via the Barnett formula. It is only in the last couple of years that oil revenue has equalled or exceeded Barnett transfers. Given that North sea oil and gas are declining at about 5% p.a., it's debatable how valuable that will be in future.

Secondly, I think Scotland was mentioned in the press recently for having the highest proportion of govt workers to private workers anywhere in the western world. Too many are recipients of benefits and too few generate the wealth to be able to support the economy. Something like only 163000 people from 5 million in Scotland are net payers of tax overall. It is only the largesse of English taxpayers stopping certain areas of Scotland looking like Romania (or Ireland even, before they went on and enormous debt fuelled binge that gave the temporary appearance of decent living standards)

At the end of the day, which ever country has the largest capital city will be wealthiest. Since that is England, Scotland will always be a poorer relation and dependent on tax transfers north. At least by sticking together we can try and minimise those differences. God help scotland if they get indepance and have to start fully paying their way. The flood of businesses south to avoid ruinous tax levels north of the border would cause serious social problems I would imagine.

Agreed - I'm scottish born, lived in Europe when I was young as my father was in the British army, he was badly injured while in the forces for Britain and I work and pay my taxes for a better Britain. I live in scotland, but think that Britain would be better off as a unit, rather than divided through devolution.

I'm Scottish, and British as well - not bothered if England get Revenue through Oil, Water from Scotland, Electricity from Scotland etc. They could even sell Whiskey and I couldn't care less.

There are more important things to worry about in this lifetime, and I refuse to raise my BP one point on the subject.

Anyway, thats my opinion, and thanks to this great country, we are all entitled to one - Rule Brittania!

Good man \o/

The bloke explains himself and you crack a joke? I might've been incorrect about the odd thing, Biohazard has been quite impartial and correct...

Not really sure someone who gives his location as "Dùn Èideann" can really be considered impartial. :D

I would be interested in what out Scottish friends here think of Alex Salmond ?

I personally find him irritating.

FAT, useless, lying, cheating, stupid little cretin.

No, I don't vote SNP!

Generally the people that seem all for independence are the uneducated masses who watch Braveheart when they are drunk and don't actually understand the economics behind it.

Independence wouldn't mean anything - it may have meant something 500 years ago, but it would be a token title nowadays and would bring nothing positive to the people of Scotland.

Does anyone know how reliable this argument is?

http://www.siol-nan-gaidheal.org/subsidy.htm

If true it paints a very different picture to what has been said in this thread.

Its not even worth reading that site, its based on data from 15 years ago. A lot has changed since then.

Edit - if i was to go thru it in detail i could probably rip most of its arguments to shreds.

I really can't say i trust the snp with their own parliment let alone their own country.
They sprout these fantasys of a "free" scotland, yet fail to address the issues with spliting from england.
Half of these items they promise, will fade away within a year of seperation.
I ahd a talk with one of the snp when i was in glasgow, once i pointed out that the oil in the north sea is starting to become finicially unviable to retrieve. He started to say scotland will raise it revenue from tourism and whisky....
So i stumped him by saying what happens if foot and mouth hits and the tourism of scotland is shut down because of it.

People in the snp seem to think scotland is like ireland, the difference between the two is that ireland has a larger majority of ex pats in america who are likely to vist.

I truelly believe that most Of the snp's are living in the clouds, Best line i heard was that scotland would get half the british army, The same army that signs allignaces to the british queen.
I also believe that the scots in the british army wouldnt be to impressed with the devolution of scotland, as it will end up similiar to irealnd, with little opening in the defense force.

Snp motto should be "unemployement for all"

Does anyone have a proper answer as to why England dont have their own parliament?

There isn't a sensible argument for England not having it's own assembly for the discussion of laws etc that only effect England it's just that the English so far have been willing to accept Welsh and Scotish MP's voting on bills that won't effect there constituents as the regional assemblies will control them. There are some interesting contradicitions in what Scotish and Welsh MP's have voted for at West Mister when compared to there friends back home.

Because there's no need. England already possesses the seat of national government, from which England, Scotland and Wales are ruled.

England's interests are amply represented and her needs amply catered for by Westminster. What would be the purpose of a separate English parliament?

I do not feel they are "amply represented" Maybe in the south east they are but not in other places.

There is nothing wrong with Englands representation at westminster in the same way there is nothing wrong with Scotlands or Wales's. What is wrong is Scotish MP's voting for tuition fees in England when they know the vote won't effect the people who voted for them, surely you conceed that anything that will only effect English voters should only be voted on by the people they elected and not the Scotish and Welsh MP's?
