Hi Guys,

I cracked my screen this weekend and looking to get it repaired. It will need the whole screen replacing and not just the cover - Where is the best place to get this done?

Thanks

Don't have an answer but have 2 x iPhone 4 at work from various managers that have smashed their screens and I need to get them repaired, local shop said £60 and Apple said £120 for a replacement handset, was thinking of doing it myself but don't have the time and think it could be a bit fiddly

Will watch this thread and see if any other ideas pop up

Pretty much as iMacMart said. I'd look at how bad the damage is, if the phone has quite a few knocks and scrapes that you aren't happy about it is probably worth heading to your local Apple Store and just paying the replacement price.

I heard you have to be really careful with the digitiser if you are doing it yourself - I'd rather give it to a professional tbh. Will call around a few places probably. I may even consider a replacement handset from Apple if they do offer it.

Make an appointment with an Apple Store and see what they say. They've been known to replace handsets FOC on a one off basis, even when it's clearly accidental damage.

Worth a try, all they can do is say no, or tell you that a replacement handset will be around £120.

However if you are willing to try it yourself, so long as you don't mind fiddly electronics and have good levels of patience, it's really not that difficult. I replaced the home button in mine and whilst it was quite fiddly, I would happily do it again.

EDIT - take a look here for awesome instructions if you fancy having a crack yourself... http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-iPhone-4-Display-Assembly/3148/1

It is recommended that when replacing a cracked screen yourself, you purchase the digitizer and LCD screen combined (already glued together). They're about £25.00. Repaired my sons Ipod Touch recently, took about an hour following a vid on the internet. The kits normally come with the tools required.

I replaced both the screen, the digitizer and the flex ribbon/headphone socket/mute button on my 3GS, its not something I'd like to do again, but the screen/digitizer was probably the easiest part. Pay a little more than the average if you plan to do it yourself, my replacement screen broke when I applied pressure to it to snap it back into the case....

Alternatively, I used these guys to replace my first screen that broke:

more expensive, but peace of mind as I was really happy with the work and the quality of the parts.

Phone Insurance?

I dropped and cracked my iphone 4 about 2 months ago. Cost me in total about £20, £15 for the claim as it was my first, and around £5 to ship special delivery to insurance repair service. Came back within 2 days with a brand new screen.

Was going to DYI but I couldn't be bothered as you have to strip it all down completely and would have to wait for parts to arrive. But it probably isn't that difficult plenty of vids on YT for it. Just more a time sink then anything

It's not just recommended it's pretty much a requirement to buy the LCD/glass as a unit. Also, some of the cheap ones don't work well with the proximity sensor as they let too much light in and stop it from working all together. Quality repair parts, patience and a steady hand required, there are a lot of very small screws and cables in there and most of it has to come out to repair them, 3G/s was so much easier :(

This is true, managed to get my girlfriends iPhone 4 replaced FOC even with accidental damage.

i sent mine off on monday to https://mobileease.co.uk/ and got it back on wednesday.

i had smashed the glass on the front of my black iphone 4, and the home button had been getting worst for the last 6 months.

i decided to get the black to white conversion for £90 and it looks good as new now

I'm going with these, no insurance as they were company handsets, the users that dropped them will have to foot the bill

Sent 2 iPhone4 out to these guys, had a call next day (morning) to say they were done and made payment £84 each and had them in my hand this morning with 5 padded boxes with free postage in the bag in case we have any more smashed (company has 50+ handsets)

Friendly pro service...

I've cracked the top left of my screen, I wasn't going to bother with Apple as they've fobbed me off in the past (Brent Cross store). Worth booking in with my 4S? Local phone shop wants £45 to replace it, I also have the phone insurance route I guess (via Santander).

I also had cracked the front of my iphone 4, it was so bad that bits were slowly chipping away and revealing components inside! Shame I didn't take a photo.

Well I was waiting to see if the iPhone 5 was to be announced so I weren't too bothered to get the screen fixed if I was going to get a iPhone 5 soon but since there was nothing I decided to get it fixed today.

The shop replaced my screen and also the back of my wife's iPhone 4 which was cracked for £50 all in, initially quoted £40 for my screen and £15 for my wife's phone. I left the phone with the shop for 30minutes and it was ready when I came back to collect it.

After comparing the new screen to my friend's original 4S and my wife's original 4 it was exactly the same, no colour or resolution issues at all.

This shop is based in Camberwell, London and I'd definitely recommend them for the fix. He also sold me a screen protector for £5 which he put on perfectly.

Hope this helps.

Apple replaced my iPhone free of charge when I'd cracked the whole front and back glass. Just say you dropped it getting out of your car and be completely oblivious to their unofficial replacement policy
