im looking for a SCSi RAID card ultra320 compatible, RAID 0 or 1 will be the only things used, what price would i be looking at for one and can anyone recommend a decent model? cheers

ive already got 4 SCSI drives, although a little old (dated 2004) they came out of some old servers so im tempted to test the differance of these compared to onboard RAID0 with SATA drives, i do have a scsi card which is ultra160 (is there much differance between 160 and 320? my knowledge is limited on SCSI) but its so old im not sure im going to bother even testing it

What kind of free slots do you have because that's going to determine which cards will be of interest - there's no point in trying to RAID0 a bunch of drives and then throttling the array by using a PCI slot.

cheers jbloggs ill have a read through that

rpstewart what slots would be best to have free? currently ive got only PCI or the small PCI-E slots sadly

The 1x PCIe slots will be fine, they have a dedicated 250MB/s link onto the front side bus whereas the PCI slots only have 133MB/s which is shared between all the devices on the bus - the slots, probably the onboard sound, possibly the LAN etc.

I went for the Dell perc 4e/dc (essentially the same as the Megaraid 320-2e)for my rig - they are a little scarce at the moment, but I'm sure a newer equivalent is available now.

I've yet to come across a 1xPci-e compatible one, but RPStewart might know of one. Ideally you want to use a minimum 4xPci-e slot (ie the 'other' one on your mobo if it's Sli/crossfire able)

The Gen 5 stuff is available now so you might want to search 'that auction site' for the Perc 5 stuff - but make sure you get Pci-e (not pci or pci-x) and it's u320 not SAS :D

Hmm, turns out the only PCIe 1x card I know of (adaptec 29320) doesn't support RAID so looks like the Perc card is probably the best cheap option.

Just a quick addendum - Ignore everything I said previously about cables - Cheap cables are the spawn of satan and should be banished to the ninth plain of hell!!! I've just found my 3rd broken one (not bad out of 4) - I'll try to source some quality ones that last more than 2 weeks and let you know. There is nothing more frustrating than having an unstable platform because your wiring isn't up to scratch - I've learned my lesson ;)

hi caveman, yea got your email, goign to give most of it a go next weekend i think, was going to do it this weekend but i had a rough night and not much sleep so staying away from braking my pc for the time being ;)

cheers for the advice though its much appreciated :)

been looking to get my scsi array of my 2120s card in a 32 bit slot (64bit card) and onto a pcie card. my 15k drives are getting killed 45mbs on a 4 drive array (bloody slow)

hoping a pci upgrade will allow 3-400 mbs speeds
