Blind man bottled in the street
by Lorraine Tinney
CALLOUS yobs smashed a bottle over a blind man’s head during a lunchtime attack.
The 49-year-old, who was wearing dark glasses and carrying a white stick, had just got off a bus in Greenock town centre when he was hit from behind.
He was assaulted on the corner of West Stewart and Argyle Street around 1.30pm.
A passing good Samaritan then helped him to his feet.
Distraught from the attack, the victim went into a nearby pub for a drink before suddenly bursting into tears.
The barman at the Hole in the Wa’ pub told the Telegraph: “This man is blind — what’s this town coming to?
“He was holding a napkin on his head when he came in then he burst out crying.
“I told him he should report it to the police — then when they arrived he broke down again.
“He was crying for at least five minutes. He had a cut to his head.”
Police are examining CCTV footage and are appealing for the woman who came to the disabled man’s aid to come forward.
Anyone with information should contact Greenock police on 492500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
