Seagate 7200.10 jumper settings?

Hey all,

Just purchased a pair of Seagate 7200.10 250 gb hard drives. However, I'm pretty confused. I looked at the jumper on the back and it says if there's a jumper, you limit it to 1.5 gb/s rather than 3gb. However, it looks like there's a jumper in there already - a tiny grey one, although it may not be, as it looks smaller than usual and could just be part of the harddrive?

Also, I don't want to run them in RAID, so how can I select which one is primary and which secondary? It's not very clear and I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has these drives. Thanks!

If you remove that tiny grey jumper, you will enable SATA 3.0Gbp/s. With the jumper on the HDU, you are running 1.5Gbp/s. Only do this if you know your motherboard/SATA controller supports SATA-II 3.0Gbp/s.

SATA drives have no such master and slave thing like IDE. They just run each on their own separate channel. Simply choose one to use as your main disk, and the other as your secondary. I always remove all drives except the one I wish to install Windows on (for very good reasons which are long to explain) and then put the other drives in after windows is installed - if this is indeed what you intend to do.

I noticed that as well, there isn't a jumper position to select Primary, Secondary or CS.

I just set in the BIOS on my board to use one drive first and the Seagate as number 2. So perhaps look in the BIOS for some kind of ordering system away from the BOOT order.

I dont suppose you formatted the wrong HD by any chance? :p

Been there myself m8. You only make that mistake once. :D
Nope never - but once I had an IDE already there and installed on my SATA - windows put all the boot files on the IDE and the windows install on the SATA meaning I couldn't run the computer without the IDE. That was a pain in the a*** when I happened to sell my IDE. Stupid windows!

Oh well. I forgot once that I had swapped my sata cables around and I normally unplug the hd that I dont want to format when doing a Windows install as I only have two hd's. Felt like a right plonker when I realised what I had done! :p

I find that really annoying too. It sets my D: drive as the 'System' drive and it's a pain when you want to re-partition etc as it won't let you touch it.

O/T: Scoobie Dave i only just realised what's in your sig. I always thought it was some random purple, blobby thing :p

I had that happen on a Win2k Pro install, even though it recognised the SATA drive it refused to install without an IDE drive present!?

I always write on my HDDs on the back so I can identify them without pulling them out of the machine...saves a bit of hassle :)

Does that make much difference? I have 2 Seagate 7200.10 320gig hard drives, and 1 74gig Raptor. Would it be ok for me to flip the grey jumper over to? Im not sure what speed the Raptor it though and if it has a jumper to play around with, it it ok to mix and match?

should be fine to mix and match, each sata device is on its own channel.

Windows does feel nippier but the reformat may contribute to that.

Cool, I will flip 'em around when I get home. Bit more added performance!

Dont think I will be buying any more hard drives for while now. Picked up 2x Brand new Seagate 7200.10 320GB hard drives for £110 inc. delivery, a deal I could not resist! :D  :p
