seagate....aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

absolutely not true - i bought a 750GB 7200.11 that was in the main risk-group (the thailand models, iirc) and even after applying the firmware update that seagate sent me, it still failed.

Every make of hard drive is going to have some that fail.

Did yours fail due to a firmware problem or other issue?

Yeah I know of a number of instances where people have applied the firmware "fix" on the 7200.11 drives and they have still failed - far too many just to be normal failure.

On a brighter note - I've just been giving some of the new seagate 500gig 7200.12 drives a whirl and they are approaching SSD performance transfer rate wise :D 133MB/s average read speed - tho I'm not a big fan of the increase in seek times.

seagates customer service is just awful (sent me 3 firmware updates that don't work) they then proceeded to tell me to send it to holland to fix the drive but that i would have to pay!!!!!!!!
my question is this, would ocuk replace the drive or do i have to work with a company that im not sure i trust.

According to Seagate's warranty page, you have to pay to send it, but they will reimburse you if they find a problem with it.

Never personally had to RMA a drive before, but if it's still in warranty, you shouldn't have to pay anything to get it fixed (assuming you get reimbursed).

If you have one of the known faulty drives (ie - the exact symptoms, same firmware) then regardless of what the online Seagate serial number checker says (it told me my drive wasn't affected), go straight to i365. Don't bother with general customer services.

Note that if there's any other scenario you should go to customer services of course.

IMO do not touch the 1.5Tb 7200.11 I just don't have faith in them any more...

I do like my new seagate 7200.12s tho - silent, very cool running and the new 500gb platter ones are only just behind SSD for read/write speeds.

Some of them were really really noisey, depending on which colour glue they used ....

Hmmm do you have more specific info on this? Considering upgrading my harddrive right now as i'm running out of space and would like a quicker one, i thought this was a normal amount of noise but it's really annoying, if it's a dodgy 7200.10 i have that would be fantastic, otherwise i was planning on waiting for SSD's to drop.

Seriously don't do it :P save the pennies and get a 500gb platter 7200.12.

Except not heard any news on if they are gonna bring out a 7200.12 1.5TB version. They supposedly were months ago, but nothing since then and it got taken off Seagate's product page, so the 7200.11 is still one of the best priced drives to get.
