Seagate Customer service

does the drive work now its been formatted at all or is it still dead and not allowing access?

if its been formatted and useable DONT copy anything to it otherwise it may start to go over the previous data.

you can still get software which can recover data after its been formatted and a new partition created.

the software I have used before is from the site below

http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

if you need a hand with the software let me know

The drive that's been formatted is the hdd in the laptop, not the seagate portable one so that works fine.

I'll give these a go. Thanks

Didn't tell her this evening!! Gonna wait to hear back fron seagate!

Got a response from the customer service team today and just like everyone said, they won't cover data loss :( Just texted my sister in law to let her know :/ Hoping I can salvage something off her laptop now!

connect the laptop drive to your PC via a external enclosure or connect as a slave in your PC.

run the file recovery software (few links above) and see if that works.

So can I not just download the recovery software onto the laptop and do it that way? Or does the software have to be on a separate drive to the one you want to recover files from?

Also, how come it costs so much for the data recovery yet there's free software out there that will do it for you?

Because professional data recovery includes taking the drive apart in a clean room and replacing anything that has failed in order to get the data off the drive, such as motors, actuator arms, etc.

Separate drive. In some cases you can rewrite entries into the file table, but most of the time you need to read data off the old drive and not write it back, or you're just overwriting more data that you're trying to retrieve.

the drive you want to recover data from needs to be connected via a enclosure or a second drive, it doesn't let you run it from the same drive

20k! I'm guessing we're not talking normal consumer prices here! lol

Ok thanks for the help. Do I need an enclosure? Can I not just plug it into a SATA slot in my PC like a normal HDD?

you can connect it as a second drive and doesn't have to be in a enclosure.

She won't pay anywhere near that amount! I'm going to have to try my best to get something off the laptop.

Ok, I asked for the laptop this week, think I'll get it tomorrow. Fingers crossed I get something off it!

I've got the drive now and downloaded that recovermyfiles programme. Currently doing a scan on one of the partitions. Found a lot of .exe files but nothing else so far. Not sure what they are?

it took me 8 hours to scan a full drive but that was because it was faulty.

managed to recover the data from the drive in the end so all is good.

the program I used, linked in a earlier reply gives you the file structure once its finished

It finished the scan and didn't find any pictures. Didn't find anything much really. Trying that Recuva software now.

Didn't quite understand that one you linked! Will give it another go with a bit of help if you don't mind?
