Went into a shop today, had 7200.10 with white glue near the motor and commented about they could suffer from noise, also had Maxtors but rather not buy them. She started getting all defensive that Maxtor are good drives and that Seagate bought Maxtor.

What ever happened to the phrase "customer is always right" I just said wouldn't buy Maxtor and she took it personally  and she said buying a Maxtor is basically the same drive as the Seagate.

they own maxtor yeah, but maxtor still makes its own models, diamondmax10 and 9 series still as unreliable as ever, and it will stay that way , unsure about the newer models tho.
I know because i have one dmax10plus in my pc wich is from after seagate took them over, but its crap, its slow (avrg read), very very noisy (noisier than my oldest hitachi) and has a terrible seek time, and the smart report is was saying 92% performance and condtion after just 2 months.

7200.10 are quiet - really quiet.

fini

They arent that quiet, i have 2 in my pc and i can clearly hear em, and yes i have the silent pink versions, the clicking when seeking is (a lot) louder than on my caviar (not newest old ide wd caviar 250 gb)

I wouldnt trust anything shop people are saying, the avrage personael doesnt know ****, almost made a mistake setting up my raid drive because they told me raid 1 is a stripe. Also the person you said took it perosnally, is (fro mwhat i can tell) stupid, she's scaring customers away wich means less money, as a shopkeeper or sevant or whataver you should draw customers makign them buy something not saring them away beacuse you know best.

seagate bought maxtor a few months back, i heard it was because maxtor have a new manufacturing plant and it takes 4 years to clean the factory before it can be used, so to save time they bought maxtor instead.

I was reading in some Tech News that Seagate will be using Maxtor as their "cheap" brand. Which makes a lot of sense as true Seagate drives have always been superior to Maxtor.

Seen many dozens of Maxtors fail in my job, but only the one Seagate (and that was very old and badly ventilated). I still have some ten year old seagates running... :p

I bet that person advising you had a purple shirt on.... I'd never trust shop floor staff.

As to "customer is always right"... well, 'tis still true in my job. Though it is tricky to try and steer an opinionated customer into the "truth" learnt from years of experience in IT Support. :D I had a guy the other day trying to swear blind that Norton Internet Security was a decent product... ROLF. But then this guy was also trying to defend not ever running Windoze Updates on his pre-SP1 XP PCs. (Though.. funnily enough... upon my return visit.. he had suddenly done the updates... so I must have got through... LOL... some customers are just a pain... :D )

funny this post, i have maxtors in the past and were crap, western digital's their not bad, but never here of any complaints about Hitachi Solutions - are they quite and robust ?

I cant comment on the newer hitachi's, the odler 2mb chache 7200 dekstar models are very slient tho and so far its my oldest hdd in my pc...
As far as i can tell they're very reliable, but i have to keep the hdd for a few more years to confirm that :p .

I have gone from running 7 maxtors down to just one which i want to replace pronto as its seems to be dieing on me - i have 4 seagates now and a 5th is on its way!
