Just had my Samsung HD322HJ die, well not quite, switched pc on nothing.:(
removed the drive & tried it in my Akasa caddy, nothing, totally expired, had no warning signs it was dying.

Just arranged a RMA through Seagate, interesting experience, but they require you to return drive in a anti-static clamshell:eek:, nearly all my drives came in a cardboard box with two pieces of foam.

I don't want Seagate to reject my RMA because of packing, they are quite particular in required packaging.

Has any one returned a drive in a box with packing to Seagate & got a replacement.

Are they supplying the "clamshell" How on earth do they expect people to return stuff to them in anti static stuff? its not like people have it just laying around the house. All the HDD i have ever bought came in a antistatic bag and that was it, nothing else. Always thought it was weird i had no box.

Nope!

Got loads of anti static bags from the motherboards I've bought, might have a Maxtor drive box with the foam inserts lurking around, but I have never had a hard drive fail, only ever have used Samsung drives, first one to fail.

Seagate gives you several pages about how to package items, what to use & not to use, can't use bubblewrap is one.

I think the "no bubbl wrap" is because of the static they produce. In an anti-static bag then in bubble wrap I can't see how they'd argue against it.

Or is it a case of them implicitly saying "if you've got a retail drive then it owuld have come in a clamshell which you should have kept ... if you've never had a clamshell then you must have an OEM drive so go to the retailer you bought it from and get them to handle your problem"

The drive I'm returning is 2.5 years old, probably was retail, but I can't remember that far back, let alone keep packaging that long.

I've returned dozens of drives to Seagate and can tell you that while their terms are scary the reality is nothing like that. I usually send the drive in a padded (sponge) box with the drive in an anti-static bag and have never been rejected. Put it this way, its not like they're losing out big time as all you get in return is someone else's return that was repaired.

Yep, have received about 3 'new' drives in all from them, all the rest are 'recertifed' drives. Not necessarily a bad thing, except in one case where they kept resending 7200.11 drives (horrible horrible tragic drive model) and they kept dying, didn't bother to RMA after the 10th 7200.11 return died.
