Hi guys.. just about to buy a new drive for my system.. Its OEM so i need to buy cables.. But im not sure on which to buy. Do i need SATA-2 cables if there is such thing??

Thanks!

Long answer: See my sticky at the top of the HDU forum :)

Short Answer: Any SATA cable is fine - there is no such thing as a SATA-2 cable - damn manufacturers trying to mislead people. If your motherboard has sata ports, then it should have shipped with sata cables...

Sorry!

Ijust read your sticky before you posted, sorry lol..

My pc is a dell so i dont think it came with any..

and yes it has 4 sata ports.

is that hardrive any good? -->Seagate ST3250824AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache - OEM

Bah don't worry, no-one ever reads stickies :p :D.

That drive is an excellent drive. Seagates are renowned for their reliability so it is always a good choice. :)

lol good :D

I was just looking at the specs of my pc and noticed that its only 375 watt psu.....

Thats running:

P4 3.0Ghz
1gb ram
160gb sata seagate hdd + the new Seagate ST3250824AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache - OEM

+ pcie ati radeon x850xt...

Will my psu be able to handle all this do you think?? I hope so!

Should be OK - will be tight though, depending on the make of PSU. Knowing Dell, it's some cheap piece of tat so it will be touch and go, especally with an X850XT. HDU's need 30W at spin up and about 12W during operation so it's not too much. Did the computer come with the graphics or not?

No it didnt come with the gfx card.. fitted it myself a couple of months back....

It only came with one dvd drive aswell and im going to fit a new one with the order i buy tonight...

what will happen if there isnt enogh power..... and if there isnt enough power what are my options?

by the way when i chose the system i could have chosen 2 dvd drives 2 hdds and a 7800gtx if thats of any relivence

Hmm. If the PSU is a decent quality one, it will work. If a decent quality one and it cannot cope, then it won't boot. If low quality one and it can't cope, then it can blowup! Q-tec's often do this under too much load.

If you had chosen the 7800GTX, it might well have come with a bigger PSU. What card did it come with out of interest?

A new PSU is probably the only option otherwise but in all honesty, it should run fine...

Oh gawd, I have heard about Dell using custom PSU's -damn D*ll!!! I'll look into it and get back to you. If it is indeed a custom PSU, then it is likely to be of decent quality so should run fine.

Ah, you only live once... So who cares ill just buy it all.. If it dosnt work? Lol its only money and im sure ill be able to sort it out..

Thanks for your help

Update - I read on firing squad with a guy using the 375W dell PSU with an X1900XT so it should run fine as the X850XT draws a lot less power - the difference in power draw is more than enought to allow for an extra HDU.

what about another DVD-rw drive aswell???
A DVD-rw drive will use virtually nothing until it spins up and i doubt you have both your dvd drives running at the same time. It should be OK - the X850XT needs 350W IIRC (could even be 300W) and that assumes a normal loaded system so it should all be fine.

However in future - don't buy a D*ll ;).

Bah it'll still be fine because I doubt you will be gaming at the same time as that and even if you do game, it should handle that OK too! :D
