Seat Leon Cupra - R

Here's a very bad photo of mine...
I love it to bits, and they are so easy to tune :D

There are two Cupra's. A standard Cupra, and a Cupra R. There are two variants of the Cupra R, one is 210ps the other is 225ps, and the easiest way to tell this (besides that there will not be a 225ps one older than 52 plate), is that the 225 has a red cupra R badge on the back, the 210 only has a black badge.
:

I can assure you it isnt as easy as that, i have seen 225bhp cupra R's with black badges and vice versa.

The 225bhp Cupra R is known to have weaker con rods than the 210bhp Cupra R.

Head on over to www.seatcupra.net to find out more. There is a thread on there at the moment about a few 225bhp Cupra R engines going bang through them throwing a con rod :(

If your looking to have it remapped in the future i would recommend the 210bhp cupra r over the 225 cupra r.

Reasons being:

A) 210bhp Cupra r can be brought for cheaper than the 225bhp cupra r

b) They both remap to the same power

c) The 225bhp cupra r has weaker conrods.

Only things to look out for are coil packs (They tend to blow these quite a bit), the water pumps can give way because there poor design and have a plastic impellar, however GSF now sell pumps with metal impellars.

When chipped they tend to go through maf's as well.

Well worth it though :D

Which one is it? I'd normally be able to tell from the size of the front discs but they're hard to see properly with the new wheels.

I'd guess on it being a 20vT or a TDi?

Well personally I'm going for a 225bhp Cupra R in either Black or Charcoal Grey, they have 4-pot brembo brakes at the front, large 18" alloys (although decent branded tyres will be close to £110 a corner fitted), and recaro sports seats in the front. They are all 6-speed, and have climate control as standard.

They don't have Recaro's, the seats are similar but don't hold you in as good. However IIRC there were a few limited numbers with leather Recaro interior and standard Recaro's but none of the latest ones have them unless its an import.

I'm an administrator over on Seatcupra.net. I recently sold my LCR which I had from new in April 2002. It was quite simply the best car I ever owned.

It was remapped to 270+ BHP and was an awesome car to drive. Bang for buck / looks / kit etc. it still holds its own against the best of them IMHO.

I only sold mine so I could put the money in the bank and save for the replacement MK2 Leon Cupra coming out end of this year / early next. (there will be no future cupra R's - the Cupra will be the top spec and the FR the next one down).

I or any of the guys on the forum will be more than happy to help with any questions you may have.

Argh gorgeous cars! And I've only just managed to get over the idea of blowing a few K to upgrade my Cupra to an R- Don't tempt me again!!

Very good choice of car :) ...I've not got a Cupra R myself, just a TDI 130 SE as when I had it in 2003 I could not have insured a Cupra, much less an R. It's not too much of a problem now though (22, 4 years ncb) and I am tempted myself, seriously tempted, but I've spent too many years hankering an E39 5 series to really get anything else now :p

My uncle recently got a '54 plate Cupra R 225 in black, he had to look around a fair bit to get a black one mind, apparently they are quite hard to find. It's a lovely car though, feels very much like my TDI 130 to drive except the steering feels a bit weightier, the breaks are much better and the engine doesn't run out of puff at 3,500 rpm :p ...and it makes a much, much better noise! ...however, what surprised me was that it doesn't really give you all that much more mid range shove at speeds between 30-80mph, the nice surge of power the VAG PD 130 engine gives is quite comparable, don't get me wrong the 1.8T 225 is faster, quite a bit faster and it's got better throttle response and pulls much better at higher revs, as you would expect, but if you catch the good old derv burner in the 30-80 area in the right gear, they aren't quite as different as you might expect. But it’s worth it for the noise and the extra 3000rpm. Actually the best way I can describe it is, if you boot it in the PD130 in 3rd from around 30 the sort of power surge you get is very comparable to the Cupra R ...but the surge runs out fast in the diesel, you have to change up very quickly ...it doesn't in the petrol it gets better as you hold the throttle down upto over 5,500rpm which is so much more satisfying :)

As for the Leon ownership experience, I have no complaints really, rubbish windscreen wipers but not much else I can say that's remotely negative. The interior is nicely trimmed, well screwed together and has a quality feel to it, mine has been completely reliable so far, it's still the most fun diesel I've driven yet, much more fun than a 320 d or an Accord 2.2 ...which incidentally were the last 2 good diesels I drove. The Leon is a damn good car that is often overlooked by many, you can't really go wrong with them in my opinion.

20vT with 312mm discs.

A question for you, what are you looking for from the Cupra?
What I mean by that is that it is well made, clearly VERY fast in a straightline. However, my experience with driving one was that I hated the steering. If you're after a car that's more than a very fast hatchback (which is does very well), go to have a drive of something like a 200SX or BM equivalent. I'm not suggesting you have to buy something else, just get a feel for how different a well setup rwd car be when compared. Might make you think twice.

leons are very nice...OT, but I'm looking at alternatives to a Focus, and leons caught my eye, are there any niggles with a 1.6 SE Leon? I've heard of seals going hence wet footwells...but is that very common?

The leaky footwell issue was sorted a few years ago. Most older cars who have suffered it will more thank likely have had it repaired by their dealer. It is a quick fix for them.

cheers :) At the moment 2001 models seem quite cheap, and in the price range for an 1999 Focus
which is why i'm looking at them :)

I have a 2001 1.6S, only problems i've had are the coil packs :p
