Seat Toledos

I ran a Toledo 110 tdi se for a few years. Well built and equipped, engine was sufficient and quiet enough on a cruise, averaged 45mpg and had very few problems

Skoda's are very cheap purely because of the badge. I picked up an 02 plate Fabia 1.9tdi with 87k on the clock for £750 a few weeks ago, moved it on for a few hundred more after MOT'ing it and doing a few minor repairs (under £100)
I couldn't believe how little it was worth to be honest, and while it wasn't exactly good looking or luxurious in any way, its a great little work horse. (if that was a Golf it would have been £3k+ minimum)
Havn't read the rest of the thread, so dunno if a Skoda has been mentioned or even ruled out yet.

The fabia isn't competing with the golf though, it's polo based iirc

This.
However, a Polo of the same age with the same engine wouldn't have been anywhere near as cheap either :p

I'm not sure, an 8 year old polo with high miles and (from the sounds if it) no mot... Wouldn't get any more than 800-900 quid of my money.

Anyway - fox, if there's anything specific you want to know about the toledo tdi 110 then just ask, not sure what else I can tell you.

Well since my sis is looking for a car around £3500 this thread is very helpful. Since she wants either an astra or an a3, i can bet that its going to be ****(astra) or ready to fall apart/old(a3). i am going to recommend a seat leon or even a fabia, both prob diesels

Why not investigate the low MPG further and keep it?

Better the devil you know imho. Get the fault codes read, it could be as simple as a dodgy O2 sensor, bad leads etc, as she has been lumbered with a large bill already i cannot imagine she will lose any more in the next 6 months.

Shocks go and if driven hard won't last more than 50k anyway, the sump...well who knows.

Maybe go to Mazda and kick up a stink and as it isn't that old might do the diagnostics for free.

may not be much help, but a good friend had a Ibiza saloon and that was great for a year or two, but recently landed him with a £800 bill for work which needed doing (to the suspension i think, tho the details are hazy) and isolated examples exist for all cars.

Fox,

not to read through the whole thread so if it has been answered i'll go and facepalm some ware.

I had a Toledo for 4 years, OK it was the 2.3 V5 but i had it LPG'd and it was dirt cheap to run.

I'll not comment on the engine problems but more the bodywork etc.

The boot handle fell off, the glove box jammed shut then the handle came off in my hand, the surround on the fog light fell off when sat still in a field. There getting to the age where there are going to be all sorts of little cosmetic problems.

rear shocks replaced £300, bushes replaced etc etc. if you can find a tidy low mileage 2004 then it will probably be ok but my 2001 Y plate was a disaster area and getting worse all the time.

TBH it has put me off the SEAT brand all together. Anything stamped with VW tended to hold together but if it had a SEAT logo on it it fell off!

Mazda Warranty - http://www.mazda.co.uk/buyingamazda/warranties/

6 or 12 year anti perforation warranty.....

I imagine it would need FMSH to benefit, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Not a bad suggestion - would be worth looking at the small print but its usually only bodywork that's covered:

"The Mazda anti-perforation warranty covers the painted sheet metal body panels of the vehicle against corrosion or rusting through from the inner surface in such a way that the outer surface of the bodywork is affected."

Without looking to derail this thread - Re the Mazda6 2.0 Diesel engine I suggested earlier, on what are you basing your above comment on?

They are not the fastest engines and were revised a few times, they are fairly down on power for the size and only return ~42 mpg.

Ref the Passat idea: i've found mine comically expensive to keep on the road, yes i've done lots to it but putting these costs aside it has a rather complex and fancy front control arm setup, it cost me £350ish in parts alone and if i got the garage to do it would have been the wrong side of £700, then you have the DMF and Clutch issues which is another £900 when that goes wrong (which it will), undertrays (which you really want on) love coming off, that's another few £100 down the tube, then we have MAF and EGR issues which can spiral out of control.

Cost issues aside I still think the B5.5 looks quite respectable and if you buy the right one has a good amount of "toys", boring to drive yes but its not a bad place to be stuck, find one with cruise and they cover long distance without issue.

I have a Focus 1.8 TDCI Sport, really good car, its the facelift version so not as dated!

Great performance, good on the motorway, cheap to insurance and get an average of 45-50 MPG :)

Cost me £2500 with 55k (full service history, good ZZ3's all round)

Have you looked at these fox?
