I recently installed a 2nd hard drive, a Samsung 500gb SATA drive, to go with my other hdd, a Samsung SATA 160gb, that I've had since 160gb was a reasonable amount, i.e a long time :) This is not in a RAID configuration, just as an E drive.

The idea is to install my big folders, in particular Steam, on the new hdd. I did this, installing a new version of Steam on E, and dragging the folder into it. All worked well, and I started downloading the stuff I dont really need, but would like in case I ever do, you know, old games etc.

Everything worked fine for a couple of weeks, then when booting the pc yesterday after windows loaded my pc was very sluggish, one of the cores was running all the time, despite no indication on Task Manager of what that was.

I rebooted, and windows gave an error saying it couldnt save certain files - all on the E drive - and my Steam folder, with 120 gb of games on it was lost :(

My question is, is there a problem I dont know about ref 2nd hard drives, where maybe you shouldnt have big folders on them? Or is there some other problem? Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Did you format the drive first (NTFS)? Is it a brand new HD?

Also, I would have the 500GB as the main drive & the older 160GB as 2nd i.e. clone what's on it to new (empty) drive. Newer hard disks especially the Samsung F1 range are faster thanks to using latest technology/design.

Hi, yeah I did format it, and again after the failure. I think if it goes wrong again I'll have to use it as the main hdd as you say. The idea was though to be able to reinstall windows every so often on the smaller hdd without upsetting most of my stuff :(
