Hi there,

I'm trying to think of ways to earn extra money and trying to think of a second job that I could do. My problem is that I work shift work and do all kinds of shifts ranging from, 0600-1400, 0600-1800, 1000-1800, 1400-2200, 1600-0000, 1800-0600 and 2200-0600, which change every week.

This has left me struggling to think of what I could do as no employer is going to take me on for a bit of part time work if I don't know when I will be available!

I'm a 23 year old male, living in north London with my parents. I earn £30-35k currently, but cannot afford to move out on this. I'm not scared to work hard which is why I would like a second job. I have my own car for transport.

The casino bonus boat has sailed for me, I want to do some proper work, bar work or something, but no bars would take me on if I can't say when I would be available. I also thought about mini cab driving but having looked into it, doesn't really seem feasible. I don't have a problem doing shop work in my spare time, but again, shift work prevents this.

Any ideas? I want to try and find a reliable second income, so, mystery shopping etc not suitable.

gonna be difficult working shifts

not get any overtime at your main job?

sell stuff on ebay would be an option or some sort of web based stuff

I do get occassional overtime, but it's when they need me, not when I want the time.

I thought about the ebay thing, but apart from selling stuff that I own, can't see a way in.

Taxi driving really could be your best bet. You can generally work whenever you want. Money is good too if you're prepared to work hard.

I looked at taxi driving, saw all the different kinds of licences that you need, plus you need to find an agency to work for. Also, I currently drive a 4 seater, 2 door, Mercedes, not ideal for taxi driving, so would need to buy a second car.

You can work as a driver for a firm...

As bennyboy says. I've got a regular taxi bloke i use (he does jobs on the side) for any trips i need to make, he owns the car and 'rents' it out to another couple of chaps who taxi at differen't times than him. The firm he works for also has cars for drivers to use, but they get less money in return than those with their own car who just 'rent a radio'.

Might not be easy, but why not look for a job that pays a bit more rather than trying to do two jobs? You'll knacker yourself in doing two jobs after a few weeks?

I'm not really skilled in anything though, I have a degree but not in anything that I would say is particularly useful and I earn more than all my friends that I graduated with. My job is a public sector job, meaning that there is very little pressure on me when at work and I can easily work twice as hard.

I'll try and have a look into something like that, thanks.

Wanting to get a second job myself, acctually got offered one valeting cars at the weekend. Can't grumble at 70+ a day.

You earn 30-35k and can't afford to move out?

I'm on less than that and I can afford not to live at home.

on 30k you can eeeeeeeeeasily afford to move out.

my GF was living in London just fine on around 18k.

that is unless your spending stupid amounts of pointless things?!

Yup; £35K and cant afford to move? ..... something wrong with your spending habbits/lifestyle methinks.

I want to buy a 1 bedroom flat, but all I can afford on my current income is a 1 bedroom flat on the 14th floor of a block of flats full of smack heads, in the middle of the ghetto.

A mortgage lender will only lend me around £100k. I have about £15k saved. £115k doesn't even buy you a studio flat in a rough area. Even all the commuter towns outside of London where I've been looking are £185k for a 1 bedroom flat.

I'd rather live with my parents for £200pm than pay someone else £800pm in rent.
