Second jobs

You are better off renting or staying with parents, and enjoying your free time or using it to learn new skills for a higher paid job.

Your shift patterns sound like a nightmare and with a second job you will get diminishing returns with income tax, especially when it hits 40%.

Mike. Look at Colchester. I know for a fact (because im entering a contract for one) there are plenty of 2 bed flats for 120k in nice areas. check haart.co.uk.

It's a 40 minute train to london.

Makes me realise how different it is where I live, although typical salaries aren't as high, you can get a 3 bedroom house in an ok place for £100K

I've got a friend who lives in Colchester so I'm over almost once a week, they have a 2 bed flat and it's not to bad at all. Train seems rather expensive going to London mind.

ahh.. barrow-in-furness.. where my Grandad lived (and died :( ) Not to shabby an area really, pretty nice :)

Sounds more like you need to cut down expenses Mike, than get a 2nd job!

a second job isnt really going to give you what it sounds like you want, you're not struggling for money you're just suffering as a result of reluctant lenders. i would never get a second job and include that income in your income for a mortgage or similar. I actually work 3 jobs myself, 9-5 software development, some evenings and weekends security work, i've got my sia door supervisor licence so tend to get £10/hr minimum and if i really went for it there's unlimited work, i'm a bit pickier about what i work but still tend to get £500+ a month from it, I also do a bit of freelance web stuff, either full websites or I have a design company that I do backend stuff for, but that's too infrequent really, although again if i really went for it I could get a lot more work

Colchester is great, Chelmsford even better, I love Essex and would rather live and work there, only problem is that I work in West London, rather than East. The communter towns on the western side of London are a lot more expensive than on the East. Places like, St Albans, Watford, Borehamwood, Hemel Hempsted and Harpenden.

What are people supposed to do who want to get on to the property ladder that earn a half decent salary but can't afford the smallest of properties??

I was in the same situation at my last place, but I had shed loads of overtime.. I also did a bit of delivery driving on the side when my dad wanted a night off..

Not always practical now, is it?

Why not?
He is earning plenty while living at home, he should be saving like mad!

He has a good deposit and a good monthly wage. If owning a property means that much then he should move somewhere that he can do it. If not, stay at home with parents or go renting..

You're going to have to make some sacrifices i think, and commuting is probably going to be the easiest to circumnavigate.

Chelmsford prices are not as good as Colchester. You can get cheap places here, but they're not very nice :P I'm pretty sure i've viewed all the flats in our price range in chelmsford :P
