howdy :)

I currently have one of the first generation 37GB raptors, and whilst it's plenty fast enough, it's now not really enough room with todays modern games.

I could buy a larger drive instead, but I like the fast load times in photoshop etc - but if I buy another raptor to raid0 them, the original 37GB's are still £70!

£70 would get me a 500GB drive :/

Spec me a hard drive option?

Cheers :)

I have two of the 500GB WD AAKS - they are fast and quiet. If you're looking for extra storage then forget about the raptors.

it's not for storage, just for windows.. primarily games installs

*edit*

Sorry, that's not very specific - I mean to ask, will the speed of a new 7200rpm come anywhere near the 1st gen raptors? I don't want to lose any speed, but that means my only option to get more space would be to buy another expensive raptor and raid the two together! Would I notice much slowdown with a cheaper drive, or two in raid compared to my current 37GB raptor?

Cheers, sorry for the rambling!

No other sata hard drives have such low access times. So any drive you buy that isn't a raptor, scsi or solid state will slow loading times even though the throughput may be faster.

How about flogging your current raptor and just getting a single 74GB one?

I used to have the original raptor and for years I was always first onto a map in multiplayer games. Some of this period also overlapped the time when regular 7,200rpm drives caught up in transfer speeds.

RAID 0 won't give you much of a boost and might even make matters worse if you're mixing an old (presumably well used) raptor with a new one.

most likely what I'll do.. I just ran HD-Tach, and my newer Maxtor's crap all over my raptor for burst speed - that can't be right!
*edit* actually, it probably is right - the newer drives have a larger buffer and all..

Well it would have been getting slower over time if you treat it anything like how I treated mine (thrashed it 24/7). Also partly why it doesn't quite cut it as an enterprise part.
