Seeing someone inject

We should think ourselves lucky we dont have to inject and cut them a bit of slack. It's only a needle and without it, they could die.

When my mum had my little brother she suffered gestational diabetes and had to take insulin injections. She had an epi-pen type thing, you couldn't even see the needle as it was inside the pen until you pushed the button, when it would shoot out and inject then vanish again. I can't stand needles myself but I can't see how that could bother anyone.

No problem here. I'd probably make a convo about it if it were the first time I had seen someone do it. (and were in the 'group' with me, not some complete stranger.)

Bingo

And although the pen needle thing is a decent size you're unlikely to notice someone injecting using it. It takes a matter of seconds and is very discreet.

Indeed. At an old job a mate called Garv used to regularly need to inject at work due to the hours we worked. Saw him do it a few times before I realised what it was. :)

Not only did it save his life, but it once saved someone else's too. Someone on another department hadn't taken theirs and collapsed at work and he was able to inject them with his. Lucky Garv was about and was careful as no-one else in the building had one.

Well, I am scard of needles despite having bllod tests every 2 months or so not to mention intravenous ones on many occasions.

I think it would be totally understandable in case of an emergency. Btw, are they used only in emergencies?

If it was on a regular basis, eg at work, i may ask the person probably to turn around or maybe make an effort to do it somewhere more private. I am not sure though, as I have never witnessed one.

Diabetics have to inject before every meal, and it shouldn't be them that has to turn around to be honest, its the needle phobic that has the issue with it, so maybe you should go somewhere else?

They collapsed because they never took insulin?

It was more probably because they took too much insulin, and never ate enough or something like that and their sugar went too low. Your colleague must have had a glucose injection thing.

I know it's irelevant, just didn't sound right :p .

Both of my siblings are diabetic and I cringe whenever they inject themselves. I have no problems with other people doing it in public and as the injectors are very distinctive it's obvious it's insulin.

Incorrect, not all of them need to. There are many different methods to deal with the injections.

it makes me feel sick watching my mam inject her stomach every day but people should be left to do it in public as its somthing they need

A guy who was in my form at college had to do this (usually in form time). Never really bothered me even though i'm not great (not a phobia) with needles. As said, would rather he do it than die!

That's not true. But generally the trend that people go by. I can inject after meals and some don't have to inject before or after, depending their regeim and which type of insulin they take.

didn't read the whole thread but I'll answer the question.

It doesn't bother me at all, if you've got to inject then you've got to inject. You shouldn't have to go and hide away somewhere to do it.

One of my best friends from school is diabetic and injects after just about everything he eats. He got some pump thing that had a needle into his stomach for a trial a few years ago but it tried to kill him so he doesn't have that anymore.

Are you/would you be botherd seeing a diabetic person inject in public? Injecting in their leg, belly etc in a public place like a pub, bus or basically anywhere.

Would it make you cringe and wonder why they don't keep it private?

and if you have a fear of needles would seeing someone else use one make you feel weird?

(I am diabetic (hate the word tho) just asking for opions, this isn't my opinion.)
my best friend is type1 diabetic. he has to inject 4 times a day currently.

i've seen him do it so many times i don't even find it unusual (although, we do all pretend that he's a junkie ;) )

Hadn't taken their injection kit to work and needed it ;)
Which injection kit, the insulin one? As you can't collapse or anything like that not taking insulin, as it lowers the blood sugar level, and high blood sugar doesn't affect you like that.

But i don't know why i'm even bothering asking :D ;) as it doesn't matter.

A lot of diabetics definitely prefer to nip to the toilet and inject for privacy, but I don't mind people doing it infront of me or around me. It's a very necessary thing to do!

If you want to open another can of worms, what about breastfeeding in public? It's pretty necessary too!

If your blood sugar is low enough, you'll collapse soon enough!

My dad has been diabetic for around 25 years and does it day in day out using a novopen, but when I was younger I remember the old orange capped hyperdermics being used before the pen was around.

The way I see it, its no difference to an asthma inhaler or pills in public. I think its bloody cheeky for people with needle phobias to say its 'offensive.'

think his point was in general diabetics have problems keeping their blood sugar down, as lack of insulin or being to "used" to it means your blood sugar normally rises without it, not lowers. Most people that collapse from diabetes though have to low blood sugar and often need some sugar asap to get blood sugar levels up.(i think, if thats right(in general) i learned that from neighbours years ago, brad saved someone like that, i'm old :( ).

fact is, i don't get why people are like "at least have the common courtesy to do it in private". what part of it isn't courteous(sp?). someone farting in public is rude, someone being loud, or obnoxious is rude, getting naked isn't rude, its frowned apon unless its a hot chick. where is injecting yourself for health reasons rude. mostly people won't notice, sure someone might notice, but you might overhear a private conversation between two dudes talking about bumming each other, its not rude, but you might take offence from it but you overheard it. if someone ran after someone with or without a needle phobia yelling "i'm gonna stab myself, watch, there might be some blood, woo, i'm a pedophile" then stabs themself, thats about the only way injecting yourself could be considered rude :p
