Seen horrific things...

Depends, sometimes in winter i stick one on for the commute home, not everyday though as you say looks crap.

Infact as it seems this thread is for the daily mail readers in OCUK, lets make its law so that everytime you leave the house you need a hi-vis jacket on "just in case" and its proven to be safter than a beige duffel coat" :D

Just leaving the house you don't put yourself in an inherently dangerous situation do you?
Riding at 30+ mph surrounded by 1-2 tonnes of metal moving at 30+ mph on the other hand is dangerous.
You're just trolling now really aren't you?

while his stance on kit is not what I'd advise, he's right about his freedom of choice. inalienable rights might not be popular but a lot of people sacrificed their lives for them.

I think we should all chill out and respect each others opinions. it's not law and so all anyone can do is suggest/advise. it's education that has led to a growth in the market of protective kit.

So why do you have to be at 30mph to have a accident.... You dont. I would imagine there is more pedestrians hit by cars than bikers having a off, making everyone wear a hi-vis would could down inury and drains on the NHS which everyone seems to rant about.

Fail trolling.

Nowhere did I say you have to be going over 30mph to have an off. Surely even your limited logic however can appreciate that on modern roads with limits generally between 30 and 70 mph that my statement of 30mph+ is a logical one. It's at these kind of speeds that you're going to suffer the real damage, not that sub 30 can't be dangerous too.

I don't know, a 2 tonne piece of metal stopping bikes front wheel instantly when the bike is traveling at 20mph. That's a lot of energy going into throwing you about.

There are plenty of cases of under sub 30 mph crashes that end up with the riders paralysed, sure you might not die from skin rash under 30 but if you hit that kerb with your neck or back unprotected, bye bye...

Or...
Guy #3 doesn't get knocked off as he's wearing hi-vis and has extra lights on his bike. Thinks guys 1 and 2 are both muppets for draining the NHS etc etc

doesn't matter how visible you are if the other person just doesn't look before they maneuver.

in the subject of gear though a when I dropped my.bike in.the wet going from work to college I decided to stop by at home an get my.gym stuff first, so I took of the ****** cotton.cargo pants I commuted in and wear at work, and out on my.gym shorts and my textile waterproof ce armoured pants over the top. then crashed RUbbing down the side of the pants enough to grind the metal zips down.and off.

bought.myself some.kevlar lined cargo pants after that dread to think how much skin.id have lost of I hadn't changed pants on a whim

oh a fun own my.brother told.me.when he was working in a&e if you tbone/go into the back of something and go forwards over the handlebars the instruments/screen can errr scrape you smooth down there as you go over they had one lad who'd been pulled out on and went into the front wing and over the car. his little friend was intact but the two boys were out of the wrapping and they found them in.the knee of his one piece :(

Ouch!

Yea I think spleen damage is quite high in bikers too along with ballbag destruction :p
If you have the time try and jump off :D

I had a 70mph off 2 years ago, in full kit. I still lost a fairly big chunk of hand. I literally shudder when I think what would have happened had I not had full gear!

Gear up people!

I just come back from Crete. Every single person on 2 wheels there is in flip flops, shorts, no helmet and more often than not, no t-shirt. I ended up having a little rage to my girlfriend every 30 seconds a bike drove past. It's daft i tell ya!

I saw this in Zante last year.....even the guy who tried to snatch the wifes bag off her arm as he went past us was dressed this way, would have liked to have seen him scraping along the floor to be honest, would even have helped him achieve this had I been quick enough ;)

It is indeed, I can testify to that. In 1990 when I had my major 'off' I violently ruptured my Spleen. It basically exploded which caused major internal bleeding as you can imagine. I was told at one point during the surgical procedures being carried out in theatre I had a team of surgeons working to stablise me and sort out my smashed knee and lower Femur which had shattered and impinged onto my Femoral artery and another team of surgeons removing my Spleen. I certainly had an angel watching over me that day in hospital.

Fast forward over 20 years and I'm still suffering from the effects of the incident. I've been taking Penicillin every day since then which is fairly standard practice among those patients who have lost a Spleen. However last year I was diagnosed with Massive Hepatic Splenosis as a result of the trauma to my Spleen. Cutting a long story short - the Splenetic tissue which wasn't fully cleared up after my surgical procedure is very resilient and hardy stuff. It's attached itself to the Splenetic bed and various other organs surrounding that area including my Liver. I have three 'accessory Spleens' sat right on the Porta Hepatis which is where the Liver takes its main blood supply. These accessory Spleens are taking away valuable blood flow from what my Liver would expect normally and are growing in size every year. Some days its very painful but most of the time I have a constant dull ache in that area. I need to watch my diet as any processed foodstuffs are a bit of a no-no and alcohol intake is at a level just above teetotal. A glass of wine causes me to feel like I've had a terrible night on the tiles. Unless I go private its not something the NHS will entertain as far as treatment goes. I've been told just to get on with it. It's a fairly rare condition but that's scant consolation!!. I do worry what implications it may have for me in the future and because of that I have recently decided to go private and investigate what is open to me as far as treatment goes. It hasn't affected my career as yet but my quality of life is now at this stage, being impacted upon.

And for the record, during that 'off' back in 1990 I was wearing a thin paddock jacket, Levi's and trainers. The only protective gear I had on was my Arai Giga Doohan replica (Remember those kids? :p ) and a pair of Fieldsheer gloves.

i always get comments about why I use full gear while riding my 50cc moped. i dont care about how hot it is how far im riding and the fact that even on a good day I barley get up to 30mph I will always wear my full gear because I dont want to end up with no skin on my ass
