Sega announce Megadrive Mini.

I assumed that Sega would want to handle this release because of the quality of ATGames' past efforts (which have been generally panned) and the success that Nintendo have had with their classic mini's...if you keep doing the same thing over and over how likely are the results to differ? Until this gets universal praise I steadfastly believe that this will have a multitude of issues, sound chief amongst them. Why Sega? Have ATGames got them locked in somehow?
Don't forget the input lag either.

Was this thing ever released? I can see an older AT Games console (which I believe is generally considered to be pretty guff) and there does seem to be another one - a "flashback edition" that looks like a meagadrive? Is that the new "meagadrive mini" (if so are there good reviews?)or is it still to be released?

Not yet, may even be a Japan only thing when it does get released.

All the AtGames things are generally pretty bad. Either can't run full speed, or massive input lag or the sound emulation is way off. Or all of the above.

We have an update!

Not coming this year.

From twitter (and translated from japanese)

[Announcement] The release of "Mega Drive Mini (tentative name)" announced at Sega Festival 2018 will be changed in 2019. We have been developing for the release this year, in particular, the response from overseas customers is large, and the United States will prepare a model that reproduces "GENESIS" and European version "Mega Drive" in Europe, and will be released at the same time worldwide.

In addition, in order to achieve the quality that satisfies Sega fans more, we reviewed the design centering on the original member of the Mega Drive, and took the system to advance in cooperation with the domestic developer who has a proven software development. We are sorry to bother you. Please wait with anticipation for a while.

Sounding like they've dropped AtGames *HURRAH!* Also sounds like they've taken a hard look at the Ninteno, NeoGeo, C64 mini consoles and the news from Sony and gone back and are polishing it up a bit. Not a bad thing.

We have an update!
Launch date - September 19th.
40 games.
$80

Development by M2. Same guys who did Sega Ages. This is a VERY good thing, it's not AtGames

Games announced so far vary with region.
Japanese version - Sonic 2, Puyo Puyo 2, Shining Force, Castlevania Bloodlines, Powerball, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Rent-a-Hero, Space Harrier II, and Madou Monogatari Ichi.
US Version - Altered Beast, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Comix Zone, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Shining Force, Sonic The Hedgehog, Space Harrier II, ToeJam & Earl

https://kotaku.com/sega-will-release-the-genesis-mini-on-september-19-1833681956

However, Japan gets the 6 button controllers and US gets the 3 button. We'll probably get the 3 button then... and still no Sonic 3... that music rights issue is a real pain in the backside.

Preordered here too.

I'm actually having some hope that it's up to Nintendo levels now it's not AtGames and they've spent time and money on it. Let's hope it doesn't turn into a Sony or SNK job.

More games announced today. Now up to 20 of the 40 revealed.

Snes mini was also a little hard to track down. But there was constant restocks.

Wouldnt surprise me if there are stocks of the megadrive available. Just due to the sheer quantity of AtGames crap over the last few years.

Now Sega have realised that it could be a money maker, they're taking the Megadrive seriously again. Finally.

The fact that M2 are on it gives me quite a lot of hope. Added to Sega dumping AtGames almost as soon as the backlash happened and then delayed it to make it right.

Yeah, feeling distinctly positive about this one.

Next list of games:

Beyond Oasis
Ghouls 'N Ghosts
Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star IV
Street Fighter II
Mega Man: Wily Wars
Sonic Spinball
Vectorman
Wonder Boy in Monster World

Some good games there.

Japan gets a slightly different 10 again.

Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts)
Street Fighter II Dash Plus: Champion Edition
Rockman: Mega World (Mega Man: The Wily Wars)
Golden Axe
The Super Shinobi (The Revenge of Shinobi)
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
The Story of Thor: A Successor of the Light
Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
Party Quiz Mega Q
Yu Yu Hakusho Makyo Toitsusen

[edit]

And a 6 button controller will be available. But from Retrobit.

So all they need to do now get it more like a Nintendo product and not a Sony/SNK product. With M2 doing the software side, I'm hopeful there.

Obvs that is cosmetic only but are any of the games in that list either the 32X enhanced versions or mega CD games (IIRC mega CD games were a bit crap overall and were just trying to show off the "graphics" with some paint by numbers "push up now" instructions)?

Nope. All plain Megadrive.

Mine arrived this morning. Unboxed it. Not connected it up yet.
Really have no muscle memory of the pads. I was/am a Nintendo person.

How does this compare to other emulators - for example I got a Sega Megadrive games collection for the PS3 with 40 games, is the emulation with this thing going to be significantly better?

It's about the same. They have found that the CPU is underclocked and on rare occasions can cause a stutter, but the guys who are looking ad modding them have found they can reset the clock and it works fine and sorts that out.

Other than that, it's nice. On a par with NES and SNES Classics. Well above the PS Classic.
