Copied this off SA, so I'll link to the places the original article cites:

I guess anyone looking to build their own HTPC (Mr Latte, etc) are screwed.

All this means is that my HD content will have to be pirate, I had no objections to buying it, but if they want to stop me building my own, then two fingers to them.

The point is, if I build myself a PC out of parts I've paid for, and then pay for an operating system for it, and then pay for a media player for it, why should I then pay for movies which are on a format which I'm going to have to crack to view.

The simple fact is, if this is true, I won't be spending money on films, whereas I was totally prepared to do that before.

Invariably the graphics cards that support it will come along in time so we've not actually learnt anything new from those articles - it just confirmed what a mess the situation is and who is to blame.

HDCP was cracked a long time ago though apparently new keys can be brought out which might render the devices useless.

True - it really depends what happens from this point. If self-built PCs will never be able to enjoy HD content then this is a massive case of shooting oneself in the foot. You only have to look around these parts to see how much people with self-built HTPCs are prepared to spend on entertainment.

its noy saying self-built HTPC's won't be be able to watch HDCP stuff inthe future, isn't it just saying that no available GPU or O/S currently has HDCP

because they are HDCP ready - its just no board manufacturer has made a card with the secure rom on it with the keycodes. Yes it is misleading though - People like Sapphire shouldn;t put that on a box when there is no way to make that card HDCP compliant after the even.

There will be entry level GPU's out there in time with HDCP DVI or HDMI eventually just give it time...

Once there is a market they the things will be made but currently there is not a market...

just illustrates to me the confusion surrounding HDCP and high def in general, i'm pretty clued up and i'm still confused about it all, so hate to think about the average man on the street.

If it does turn out only oem computer can play high def, i really think movie companies will be shooting themselves in the foot, as there will just be a proliferaiton of cracking and filesharing to get round it
