Self checkouts

If this country wasn't full of dishonest Jeremy Kyle watching scum we could have a system like they have in some Swedish supermarkets. As you go round with your trolley you scan things using the attached barcode scanner and then just pay at the end. So much quicker.

We do.

"Are you OK packing?"

"Yes thank you"

The next thing that happens is some kind of race between them and me to pack my items before they crush it all in the tiny space at the end and destroy any fragile items.

It's almost as if I have challenged them to a dual.

we have this very system, my local Sainsbury's and Waitrose have it noob!

i love self service machines. i just sail through with my headphones on. nice.

what i really hate is when staff are told to make idle chit chat when they serve you. it's so obvious it's not genuine so why bother?

DID YOU USE YOUR OWN BAGS?

That very much depends on the till. Some tills are very much designed for them to pack for you and would require you to reach around if you don't.
It is also part of their duties, if needed.

I work for a Supermarket and packing bags isn't a part of my 'duties' while on a till...

I work for a small supermarket and although I have never been told by managers to pack/not pack bags, I do pack the bags myself as much as possible. If the customer grabs the bags and proceeds to pack it them self I leave them be, and also if there is a large amount of shopping I try to leave them to it so I can continue scanning as I do not want it to take too long. Generally I try to do what I would want someone serving me to do.

My local sainburys checkout person asked for ID from me while buying paracetamol (gotta be 16)... i'm 25 and not even been ID'd for booze for years (an early receeding hairline will work wonders for that)... fail. There was an arkward silence and i gave my best WTF face as I really wasn't expecting it. I'm really not aware of any 'challenge 30' paracetamol ads at the present time, so she didn't have much of an excuse.

You only get that when you swipe your nectar.

But yes, you are right.

*hangs himself*

You also missed PLEASE PLACE YOUR ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA when you've put something like a birthday card through.

A friend works for NCR, the contracts to maintain self checkouts are probably a lot more than people think, especially with Sainsbury's where they've paid to cover what would be classed as non standard repairs such as physical damage or misreporting an issue resulting in an unnecessary call out - then there is out of hours support etc.
