Self checkouts

omg you're Jesus!!!! :eek::eek:
This is what happens when you drink haha.;)

In all seriousness however, I don't think most people understand how difficult it is to work in customer service. I did 5 years of it at Somerfield/co-op. Most people were nice and pleasant, but once in a while a complete **** would come along and ruin your day. I was proficient at my job and never got problems, until said person came along and was being a **** just for the sake of it.

I just hate supermarkets. I find them scary and confusing and an invention of the devil. I had to go to one yesterday, I had no choice, but I found the checkout girl very friendly and efficient, not for me these automated devil spawn.

Unless I have less than 5 items, I'll avoid the self service tills like the plague. They're absolutely useless, every other item sets off the "unexpected item" warning so I have to stand around waiting for someone to check, or they give you such little room to bag stuff up that after shuffling stuff around to make you, you get an "unexpected item" error again.

A couple of times when I've had to do late night shops, I've asked if they can open a till for me so I don't have to use the horrid things and they've been happy to do so

Does anyone else struggle to get the bags open at the self service checkouts? I use 'em for a few items nowadays, typically what happens is I scan my first item, then faff around with the plastic bags for 5 minutes before moving on and scanning item two.

This annoys me, it is a fast lane for shopping, and some muppet is trying to put a full trolly load of food on the self checkout! This is one thing that annoys me in life! :p

I always do this, there are 2 choices:
1 - use the self checkout and be out in 5 mins
2 - join the queue at the tills and be there 20 minutes

maybe varies depending on staffing / number of checkouts at your supermarket.

Wet your fingers, makes it hell of a lot easier to open the bag. Do it subtly though, don't want to freak folk out. ;)

was at a self service last night, everything going fine, food was scanned and in the bag no worries, clicked contactless payment, went to put my card on the doodad, store "helper" came and cancelled my transaction for no reason whatsoever, which then preceded to break the machines delicate workings so i had to use chip and pin -.- #fml #tescotroubles #ilovetohashtaghashtags ##

One annoying thing I've found with Tesco ones is that they don't accept or print the "your shopping was cheaper at x, here's your discount" vouchers. Quite often I'll end up with a voucher to knock a couple of quid off next time I'm in when going through the checkouts. I've even had and used one that knocked 1p off due to principal :D.

Failing that I'd probably use the pay as you shop thing because it looks like a great idea.

This. Someone at work mentioned this to me a few months ago. It's literally made my shopping experience so much better. I hate being the moron who can't get a bag open whilst there's 5 people glaring at you waiting to go next :D.

Mind you I've got a drawer full of bags at home that I use for rubbish and stuff. I should really through a load in the car and re-use them.

Those vouchers are printed and accepted for me using scan as you shop

I can't comprehend how people struggle with these machines. If you do, 9/10 times you're not following the instructions.

I love self service checkouts :)

Trouble is, different chains have contracts with different providers, and different providers have better and worse products. The morrisons self serve machines are a shambles of unbalanced scales, 'would you like any cash back' 'do you have a match and more card' ... no. **** off, let me pay :P

Weighing item, incorrect item in the bagging area, please wait for assistance.

it must happen a lot because they just go past the error and never check

one thing I noticed at asda half the offers listed on the shelves aren't actually active on the self service

I had a short stint on the tills in Morrisons and never helped pack, though we were meant to ask if they needed assistant. One time I didn't ask I failed to notice the guy only had one arm :o.

I avoid self service checkouts like the plague

can never seem to fathom them and in the end an assistant helps me anyway, whats the point? just put a human being on the till in the first place, stupid idea's

Please place the item in the bagging area...

Unexpected item in the bagging area.

FFS!

Yeah I have that problem when using a rucksack or heaver bag.

If you put it on the bagging area it complains. The only way is to put everything you've bought in the bagging area loose (which is a PITA if you've got a lot of stuff), then bag it up after you've paid.

Also very very light items that can't be detected by the scales will mess things up. It will endlessly ask you to place the item in the bagging area and not let you scan anything else.

I actively avoid self-service machines. Main gripes I have are:

-Usually won't accept my vouchers for '£x.xx off your next shop'
-"Unexpected item in bagging area"... 'nuff said
-Sometimes when using the on screen menu if you choose the wrong option you can get stuck i.e. no obvious way to cancel so have to call an assistant to override (even if the option exists, the UX must be terrible if I can't find it)
-With fresh unlabelled produce it is not always easy to find in the menu (I appreciate the checkout people probably use the same system, but they will be familiar with it)
-Delays while you have to get approval for buying certain items
-Have to be quicker on the uptake with opening up the bags to receive goods, on a normal till even if you are being a spaz and taking 30s to prise a bag open, at least items are still being scanned and you can catch-up once you've opened the ****er

Essentially I only use them if I'm doing straightforward shops i.e. all pre-packaged goods with barcodes, no alcohol etc and big queue for normal checkouts
